I would also appreciate some help on area 40. I was planning to try it for the 1st time this year for cows. However, I just noticed that the new regs eliminated the later cow season ON the national forest. The only season listed is OFF the NF. What can you all tell us about the hunting down lower off the NF?

***Just noticed this comment and it is in error because after 10/15 the Type 6 cow license is good until the middle of December in the entire unit, but only off the NF before that.

any word on area 40?
i will be hunting there next year :)

***See post #5 and he lives in Wyoming!!! The entire Bighorn Mountain system supports a great herd of elk with a lot of good bulls if you have the time and knowhow to hunt elk. It's also some gorgeous country to see even if you don't fill a tag.

Elk population---very good with good bulls
Good places to start looking---Start high in the forest, but not up into the wilderness unless you have a guide or licensed resident guide, and work your way down depending on how good or bad the weather is IF you get a tag. You say you're hunting there next season, but the application period isn't even until next month and the draw results won't be known until the end of February, so don't count your chickens before they hatch as the old saying goes! Have you checked the draw odds and how many PPs it takes to draw compared to what you have?

There are a lot of great bulls in 40. Eastmans' don't seem to think too highly of it but it's pretty underrated in my opinion. A 370+ bull gets killed there every year and the sheds picked up in the spring are proof that some big boys are still around. I came across this bull in October. His buddies were much bigger than him but he was the only one that stopped and let me take his picture.

Nice bull Elcoholic! Hopefully 40 stays underrated so it doesnt get harder to draw. I might try to draw it next year but Im undecided between 40 and 38.
