HD 240 Mule Deer

I'm wondering if anyone here has ever chased high country muleys in HD 240. I spent a little time this year backpack hunting for elk pretty far back in the Bitterroots and it's definitely some extremely rough country. I never hear of many people hunting far back in the Bitterroots and I'm wondering if its worth it putting in for a 240 Muley permit.

I live in that district. I have yet to see a really big deer in there.

Deer densities are very low.

On the up side, pressure from deer hunters is also low.

I too live across the street and glass regularly. Nothing ever to impressive. I hunted it in 2010 and the best I saw was a 22 inch 4 pt which I ended up taking.

I don't think you'll have pressure. I didn't even when it was a general tag. So it would probably be a fun hunt and beautiful country.

If you get super serious and draw the tag I would be willing to make some knowledge swaps

I moved to this district earlier in the year and have hunted in the valley on short trips for a few years now. The main reason I was drawn to want to hunt far back in 240 was because of the lack of pressure and it is also close to home. I was just wondering if it would be worth putting in for or start building points for a better limited draw district. Thanks for the insight!

Well, you can draw it second choice, so you could hunt it AND build points...

I have heard rumors of big deer coming out of the district years ago, but I have spent many nights in there, and have seen very few deer, and no big guys.

I would hunt general districts rather than restrict myself to 240, personally.

I had a Mountain Goat tag for Kootenai Creek two years ago and spent an awful lot of time in that drainage all the way back to the Idaho state line. It is gorgeous country but I never saw many deer and did not see anything large. I think there is the potential to produce a really nice buck in there, but there just aren't many deer.

I did not get my Mountain Goat but I had a great time!! I only saw one for sure goat and one possible for the whole season back there including when I started scouting about July 1 after the snow let me back in there.

Hey BB... I don't think its a guaranteed permit. Good odds, like 50%, but not guaranteed. I could easily be wrong though.

There are two mule deer buck permits, one is an early season rifle limited (240-50). The other is the archery/general unlimited (240-40).

Yeah sorry... the 240-50 is the one I was referring to. How was your season this year? Anything down?
