The white bighorn ram was harvested. An unbelievably unique trophy. Congrats to the hunter. I've seen the ram a handful of times. As have many people. He is breathtaking. Wow.

This is NOT a celebratory Event! Killing ANY sheep in that canyon goes against the agreement between the state and the tribe when the STATE used tax payer (non-native) monies to reestablish that sheep herd. That was done with the agreement that NO HUNTING was to take place on the sheep. Tribal Land yes, but the sheep were a product of State money & projects. That Ram was poached ladies and gentlemen... Tribal Laws or not!

Awhile back I did a little research about native american hunting/fishing rights. I was shocked to find out that they can pretty much hunt/fish anywhere and anytime they want. No licenses, seasons or bag limits. The caveat is their treaty that was signed. Most have a stipulation that they have a right to hunt/fish on their ancestoral hunting grounds....including private property. That part really surprised me. There is a lot of grey area too.

How about just using what their ancestors used in the way of weapons and tackle! Just sayin guys...........

Yup, Colorado... before I moved to Wyoming from Michigan the whole treaty thing got revisited and we were facing down losing a lot of ground as the treaty expired, the argument presented was that if they want things to be how they were then they could do things the way they used to do them. No guns, No vehicles, no technology that was not available to them before The Corp of Discovery or the Hudson Bay Company, or better yet, the arrival of Europeans!

I remember when the State released those sheep in the canyon. Couldn't figure out why they would waste our hunting dollars on something the tribe should've funded. A croc o scheet if you ask me...

I believe that the tribes give out a limited number of 'trophy tags' to enrolled members for sheep in which the recipient can hunt the entire reservation with the given tag. Right, wrong, or indifferent, this is just the way it is. I think the only thing the tribes fund on the wildlife side is Game Warden Salaries. I've never once heard of any habitat improvement projects, studies, etc. that weren't funded by the US Fish and Wildlife service. The fact remains that all wildlife inside this reservation remains off-limits to non-enrolled citizens. I've always been of the opinion that they should run a limited number of 'Trophy Hunts' where the outsiders could apply, and go with a guide to hunt some of this area which could be a cash cow for them.

All you have to do is look at the websites of the tribes in Az & NM and see what they charge for non tribe members to hunt. Definately a "cash cow".
