Took the camper over for a couple days to make sure everything works right, shoot some gophers, and try some shooting at 400 yards and trying to recover bullets at 400 yards. Way down where the grass changes color is a fence. To the left of center is an open gate with two stout posts on either side of the gate. In the center of the gate is my standing paper target, and on the ground just visible to the left of the paper target are 4 gallon water jugs lined up tight to each other.

I first shot paper to see how much drop I have with my 30-06 and 165 gr. Accubond at 2940 fps and my 6mm 100 gr. Partition at 3140 fps. Both are sighted about 2.5-2.75 inches high at 100 yards. I estimated about 12" of drop and it figured out to be about 11 1/4" for both. My son's 6mm shooting a 90 gr. E-tip at 3170 fps has a 4.5-14x40mm Leupold with the B&C reticle so I used the 400 yard hash mark to see how close to his load it was. It was about 4-6" high at 400 using the hash mark, so pretty darn close.

I shot the gallon jugs with my son's 6mm and the 90 gr. E-tip. It exploded all four and I found it laying on the ground about a foot past the last jug! It was as follows:

89.7 grs. for 99.6% weight retention - expanded to .405 caliber

The jugs were toast and I had two 6-gallon water tankers that had seen their better day. I used my 30-06 and the 165 gr. Accubond first and drilled them. Water shot up into the air and it burst the valves off the top of the tankers. I should have opened them as it also split seems. I might have been able to use them for a couple more times wrapped the holes with duct tape. Never found the 30-06 bullet. I believe it went through both.

I quickly grabbed my 6mm with the 100 gr. partition and shot the same water tankers and water went spewing up into the air. I then grabbed my 30-06 and put another one into them. They were turned slightly now so I started shooting at the right side of the first one hoping that some water was in it and enough in the second to catch a bullet. I shot both the 30-06 and the 6mm twice and I grabbed my son's 6mm and sent an E-tip on its way. I figured I had nothing to lose and hoped enough water remained. Here is how the 6-gallon tankers looked. Notice no top valve on them.

I did find the first 6mm Partition, but no 30-06 Accubond and no other E-tips.

100 gr. Partition:
64.0 grs. 64% .620 expansion at widest point

The 400 yard bullets are both on the far right. The partitions in front and E-tips in back.
25 yards - 100 yards - 300 yards - 400 yards
25 yards - 100 yards - 400 yards (Partition)

Well done! I enjoy reading about 400+ yard tests. It's much more practical than say 50 yards.
Thanks, I need to catch a 165 gr. Accubond out of my 30-06 at 400 and a 90 gr. Accubond out of my 6mm at 400, and then it's on to 500 yards with the four of them. I might get my wife's 25-06 in the mix as I've done some testing with it at 25 and 100, so maybe I should include the 120 gr. Partition just for fun. I need to stick with just the one gallon water jugs so I have the same material for a catch at each distance so I have a real life comparison on penetration at each distance. It's a rough job, but someone has to do it! :)

David you are just having way to much fun with this little project. :) But with that being said I have really enjoyed all the info you have shared on here with us. Keep up the good work.

Good info, thanks. Looks like the 90gr E tip might be reaching the end of it's range for good expansion at that speed. It still did plenty, but there looks to be a definite change from the 300yd mark as it begins to lose velocity at a greater rate. The 500yd test will be interesting. Good 400yd accuracy also from all your rifles.

Yes it is fun! I cannot wait to get it all finished. I only will have to do it once, but it's been great fun and great practice. Just need to tweak my boys 300 WSM load a bit and see what the 180 gr. Accubond does out of it at 400 and 500 and see how his Zeiss Conquest with the Z600 hash marks matches up with his load. It should be pretty darn close, but I just want proof positive, and for him to shoot at those distances also. He'll find it a blast also I'm sure! Thanks .

It might be on the E-tip. I'll be interested like you are in what happens at 500 yards. I really want to catch a 90 gr., 165 gr. , and 180 gr. Accubond at 400 and 500 so I can compare with the Partition and the E-tip. My testing will be completed. It's sure fun and a great excuse to do some more practicing!

I've been tinkering with my 300 WM and the 180 TTSX. I lined up 3 jugs 2.5 gallons each, filled to the brim with water in front of my 750 yard gong. I thought that would be enough resistance at that range to catch the bullet. I was wrong. Tried 5 times, and they just ripped through the jugs and whacked the gong. Can't complain about that though. I did find one of the bullets. I was very surprised it didn't blow to smithereens after hitting the gong. The Bergers practically disenegrate into dust. If I get ambitious one of these days I'll get my camera out and take pictures. I really enjoy your tests, so I should do the same.

Once you do it, it's addicting, that's all I have to say. At least until you get all of your rifle and bullet combinations tested at all the ranges you want to do, then there is really no reason to do it more as you know what to expect. It is fun!

That's a great test you did. Guess you should have used more jugs!!! I want to see you do some more and catch some so we can have some comparisons with different makes of bullets. That would be very useful. So, can I talk you into doing some more??? :)
