Applied to Montana as Non-Resident for the first time today. Felt pretty weird to be on the "other side." $750 bucks is a chunk of change, but I would have lost a decade's worth of sheep points if I didn't send it in. Hopefully I'll be back home before too long!

Who knows...your draw odds might be better as a Nonres for sheep if you have max points. I'll probably have to do the same here in the next couple years.

I guess it's all relative. I've just never put in for any non-res tag before. Montana provided more than enough every year, and plus, I've never had the resources to do any different anyways. Eastman's has obviously been a great source of information for "making the switch," especially with learning a new state where every tag is a draw.

Oh and res tags are $80

I just put my son and I both in for moose and sheep today near Missoula. I was going to put my sheep tag in for the Missouri Breaks, but it's almost impossible to draw that one, and I'd like my son to be able to tag along if I was fortunate enough to draw.

I did get a special draw mule deer buck tag in the mail today for about 50 miles east of here where a buddy convinced me to apply. He got a whopper buck there a couple years back.

Yes, 291-50. I'm pretty excited. It's not far from home and my son will get to go with. Some elk in there too from what I hear.

how about that "online convenience fee" ??

$60 just for the convenience of applying online...

I pay it, but it's ridiculous and my only option currently.

MT should end all paper apps, phone/online only, and reduce that "convenience fee" after all doesn't a computer do all the work? perhaps a machine does all the work on paper apps as well, but I'm sure there is more human contact with paper apps than online.

ps- earlier in the year I paid a $24 convenience fee. plus bonus points at $20x2, at least I'm getting something when I pay for bonus points.

I just don't understand why I'm paying more for a service that saves the state money??

btw a "points only" option would save me some $$ on convenience fees, after all I'm essentially just applying for points this year in MT.

A resident tag in MT is 150. Trying to understand MT fish and game is impossible. I have never heard of max points in MT. Now we have the square system which makes draw odds even worse.

What max points means is that you have the most possible points since the points system started. So if the points system started 10 years ago then max points would be 10 points, next year will be 11 and so on and so forth until you finally use those points.

I think the problem is most states subcontract the computer services out, so the "convenience fee" is what a private company bid to take the work. That said, $60 is ridiculous.
