Looking for suggestions and ideas. Currently have 25 Colorado Non Resident Elk Preference Points. Had always hoped to some day cash them in on a muzzleloader hunt in the northwest corner of the state. Looks like with the point creep that ain't gunna happen. I am 56 yrs old now and with current plans in 2019 won't be able to hunt Colorado until at least 2020. At that time I will be 58 yrs old. Was hoping to cash in by the time I reach 60. Any thoughts?

If you're in good health, I wouldn't worry about doing it before age 60. My wife did a NW Colorado elk hunt at age 66 (her pack mule was 68). And we talked to another hunter who was in her early 70s. When so many preference points are required, you won't find many teenagers out there!

Here is a video of her hunt:

Are you looking strictly at public ground? There are some good hunts with good opportunities for large bulls with the ranching for wildlife tag. Beyond that those kind of points are way out of my league. Good luck!

I'd research 1st rifle options also. 2nd estrus cows are in heat and the big boyz are still trying to get that last bit of action. They know its 1155 and the bar is gonna close soon.......so pretty desperate and come to calls sometimes even better then mid to late September.

Guided hunt on DIY?

With 25 pts you should have some to spare for a muzzle loader hunt in 61.

Great video HighPlainsDrifter. Congrats to your wife on a very nice bull. Looks like you all did your home work and busted your butts. That is one well deserved bull.

JimP, I am open to either DIY or guided. My out west hunting over the years has been 50/50 DIY vs guided and spike camp set ups by outfitters. All depends on the area to be hunted. As far as point creep is concerned at this point, others have also said unit 61 might be my best option as well. Looks like I am always several years behind the guys with the most points. That may change in the years to come.

I actually was in the same delima. I was wanting a muzzle loader tag up in the north west corner but even as a resident of Colorado I was way behind in the points when I decided that I would go with a unit 61 tag with 17 points back in 2014. At that time it took 22 resident points for a unit 2 tag and 15 for a unit 61 tag and I just didn't want to wait until I was 66+ years old to draw that tag. So I drew the unit 61 tag and was quite happy with it.

There are a lot of elk in 61 with most of them in the 350" range with some larger. It is all in what you want out of the hunt.

Yep. You are correct. I don't know what I was thinking. Somehow non-resident registered as resident.
RFW hunting for NR is via the voucher program isn't it? They have guaranteed tags and long seasons, only guided hunts though I believe.
You can hunt the ranches enrolled but have to go through the ranch to get a voucher to buy the tag.
Am I right about this?
I would encourage a DIY hunt but he did mention guided.

I actually feel quite privileged to of drawn two late season coues deer tags down in 36c. One I burned points on and the second I just got lucky.

Javelina is my go to Arizona animal. Been hunting them down there since 1994 when we had no idea of what we were doing, killed more of them than I care to think about and now the trip is more just to get together with good friends and have a great time chasing those little bowling balls around. When we started I could chase them down on foot. Now I just have to outsmart them.

The point game out west here in any of the states is getting out of hand and is really a young mans game anymore. That way if they start putting in when they are in their 20's they might draw a tag by the time that they retire on non resident animals, resident points are also getting up there where you can draw those tags just before you retire. I'm glad that I am done chasing points like that in most states. I still have a few animals to go after in Utah where I have too many points to drop out of but most of those hunts I may be into my late 70's before I draw. I just hope that they will allow me to use my motorized wheelchair to go after them when and if I draw.

If you are willing to go guided you may want to consider unit 40. Not sure what your expectations are when it comes to size of animal but I think there is a good chance to kill a 350+ bull in that unit. In reading Jim P. comments about unit 61 I would caution you on most of the bulls being 350+ in that unit. It has some good bulls in it but not that many....

RFW is not a voucher, but is a draw just like any other limited quota tag. If you buy a voucher, you don't use any points to get it. You have to be very careful with a RFW hunt. I applied (along with my hunting buddy) and got one for a big ranch in northern Co. The ranch basically sets their own rules as to how many hunters, when you hunt & where on the ranch you hunt. We were assigned a certain area, there were 6 other hunters there too. We hunted after all their guided hunts were over. We both got elk (I got a bull & partner got a cow), but were the only ones in our area to do so. There were 30 hunters (if I remember right) and I got the only bull, with 8 or 9 cows taken too. I will not apply for another RFW tag.

How hung up are you on hunting with a muzzleloader? You are within striking distance of 201 with a bow arnt you? 26 points last year. Not sure what it drew out on this year.

In 2014, I burned 23 nonresident elk points. Realize I was 3 points ahead of you and I was tired of waiting for the NW corner and the backlog of guys with as many or more points looked ugly. For years I heavily researched alternate areas. I finally chose the Unit 61 muzzy hunt. It was probably the most fun elk hunt I have ever been on. I recall I cow called in 16 bulls to within bow range. I killed a nice bull with my wife at my side and it was completely my fault I didn't kill a 360 class bull at 10 yards the day before (my primer had fallen out of my muzzy). Don't go into that hunt thinking it is swarming with mid 300 bulls, will need to sift through a pile of mid 200 bulls to find the best. I encountered probably three 350+ bulls in 9 days (scouting and hunting). What makes that hunt so fun is the ridiculous density of elk. I did my hunt DIY and paid a guy $400 to pack my bull out with horses. If you want to go with an outfitter, talk to Weimer Outfitting, their uncle packed my bull. Had I not gone with my wife, I would have dropped into a canyon with a backpack and stayed in for several days.

If trophy quality is what is driving you, I would look at Unit 40 on private land. The names I have heard coming up for 10+ years are Mike Lawson and Steve Biggerstaff. I couldn't justify in my mind spending $7000+ after accumulating 25 points only to hunt for a bull with another 20+" of horn. That's why I elected to go DIY on Unit 61.

Unit 61 muzzy (DIY or guided) or Unit 40 (guided) are your two best options at your point level unless there is a new opportunity I am not aware of.

Bosque Del Oso is also good, but got discovered by the big magazines the year I was going to try to draw it. It is a bull wintering area and you really only want the latest hunt (third season I recall) on that unit. Guys I know who have gone earlier have been very disappointed. Don't mess with that area on the rut hunts, as the bulls are on adjacent private land.

Without checking the data, but if it was at 26 in 2017, it was likely 27 in 2018 and will be 28 in 2019. The difficult problem with heavy point creep is once a new point pool finally catches up, it will take years to draw through it.

Umpqua Hunter is quite right with his assessment of unit 40 and unit 61. Although this year with the Bull Draw fire going on right now the Weimers are going to have a very tough year. As of right now the fires are headed to there cabins and a ton of there hunting areas are burned or still on fire. I'm actually really surprised that a ton of guys have not jumped ship on unit 61 with there tags this year as the fire is growing very fast and parts of the mountain are closed right now. Archery season is going to be very interesting even for the unit 62 guys and gals. Several of the best areas in unit 62 can not be accessed right now due to Divide Rd being closed.
