Mineral licks

Curious out there what success people have had with mineral licks for elk... If so what kind? One of the areas I'm looking to use them is more lowland AG fields. So, I'm hoping to pattern them more like a whitetail.

Thoughts?

Get some Critter Lick or find a range mineral loose at the feed store that has a Copper level of less than 500ppm. It's a no brainer. PM me if ypu got any questions.

I'm wondering if putting out a mineral lick would be legal in a state where baiting is not legal. It's not legal in my state.

Since I doubt that you would have any livestock in the area that you would be hunting I would say that it isn't legal for you to place one since you would be doing it for the intended purpose of drawing in wildlife.

Now if you happened to be hunting in a area where livestock operators place salt and mineral blocks out for their livestock I would imagine that you could hunt it. Lot of gray areas here.

According to the current big game brochure, what JimP says is spot on. So if there is a salt/mineral block placed for livestock it is OK to hunt over it, but placing a block with the intent of attracting game is a no-no; it's under item #24 on page 14 in the big game brochure.

I should have maybe been more detailed and clear in my response. Every state is different. Lots of grey area in the wording also. Key though is "hunting" over it is what would get you in trouble in some states. Gotta read the regs close.

yup!

I see it as no different then folks planting feed plots to lure in the deer,

if it's legal in your state , I have no issues with folks doing it. though I ,personally ,would not.

just never been a sit and wait type hunter , would rather , hike, glass and stalk, and make it happen rather then sit and WAIT for it to happen.

as I said ,I have no issues with those who do, bait , it just is not MY cup of tea.
just don't have that kind of patience, often wish I did.
