After decades of a bonus point system South Dakota just instituted cubing points for all big game draws. They have essentially blocked anyone new from ever drawing those high-value Black Hills elk tags. Then propose an "apprentice hunter" season to draw new people into the sport.

Once you start down the PP road it only limits opportunity in the long run. We've seen it play out time and again. Straight draw, let the chips fall where they may.

I followed the link and looked at the power point slides and listened to the presentation. Have to say as a non resident it was nice to to be able to comment about NR tag allocation, and the history behind it for elk in Wyoming. Interesting numbers when looking that the 16% of non residents are responsible for 78% of licenses fees generated from license sales. Also how both non resident and resident bull elk harvest continues to increase (with the exception of NR 2017). Seems that chances of any change though is pretty much DOA since reports and papers were done in the mid 1990's, 2014, and updated in 2017. Status quo it seems.

I suggested raising residents tag fees. I spend more money on ammo at the range one day. If they don?t listen once my points are used I won?t rebuy for Elk or mule deer. More bang for the buck elsewhere.

The point system worked out great for us as non residents, we purchased points the first year they were offered and by following the draw odds, etc.. we pulled tags basically the years we wanted them. Granted 11 to 12 years is a long time but drawing a high quality elk tag is getting hard to do. This year we cashed out and pulled our first choice.

I love the WY non Res pp system. At least it gives you a good idea when you will draw a tag. As far as the residents go, I won't comment on their draw system as they seen to like what they have and I don't live there.
One thing I like to see never change is fronting the money for the tag before you can apply.

If you want to see real FU system look no further that what we have here in WA State. After they took away fronting the tag money for goat, sheep and moose the draw odds dropped like a rock. Everyone is putting their 5 yrs kids in with the hope they would draw a tag when the reach 70 yrs. GFL on that.

What the point creep is doing in other states is killing opportunity. We don?t need it here in Wyoming.
No doubt! Point creep for NR in WY is very real and happening before my eyes. I’ve watched that took 2,3 points etc take 5 now and so on. The tag I’ve been applying for I’ve been on the cusp of drawing for two yrs and every yr I’m a point behind. Some are worse than others. But across the board most units have saw at least a 2-3 yr increase of points needed the last couple yrs.

Who have you told this to?

What states would you say offer more bang for the buck on a mule deer or elk hunt than Wyoming?

I actually get lower cost tags in Oklahoma than Wyoming because I have a lifetime license so I hunt for free.

Im considering holding out for a few years since the lower pp areas are being flooded with newbies. Since i have a couple points, id like to see Wy can give up (as far as trophy animals) with a few more points.

I am considering using my and my son's elk points on easy access limited entry cow tags. Seriously, I am.
