Grandpa.jpg

Picture of my Grandfather hunting ducks & geese at the Salton Sea in California. Taken about 1950. He is shooting his old Winchester M97 12 ga with a Cutts compensator on the end of the barrel. Had different choke tubes that could be screwed in...way ahead of it's time. He used to call it his "dog knot". My Dad's Springer Spaniel in the picture too.

Not an old picture but a picture of something old. This is my grandfather's 1954 870 Wingmaster. Grandpa is now in his 90s and can't get out anymore. Unfortunately when i lived back east i didn't have the opportunity to hunt and lived about 6 hours from grandpa. His shotgun had been used by my younger brother and not properly cared for. The gun wss sent to me in pretty poor shape. Heavy pitting and rust on most of it. I wanted to bring this gun back to new condition so i could use it for another 60 years. So far it has only taken some chukars on a float trip in Hell's Canyon.

this old luger was handed down to me .it was my greatgrandfathers. it is a 1920 7.65 commercial luger . he killed his last blacktail buck with it back in the 70s when he was in his late 80s. has since been fired only when given to me and will not be fired again until the day I ,in turn , hand it down.

Dad's Malibu Buck 001.jpgDad's Malibu Buck 002.jpg

I just got this back from my local Taxi, it is a reconditioned mule deer mount my Dad shot in 1946. Pretty unusual as it was shot in the Malibu Mts. near LA by my Dad. After the War, my Dad bought 10 acres in Malibu (wish we had it today!) and we were going to move there. He built a cabin and we spent lots of weekends there. There were tons of deer. This buck is a very symmetrical 5x5 that Dad told me was a huge deer. He got 165# of packaged meat on the butcher's scale. It is not a coastal blacktail, but is a mulie. The story goes that a women had a big ranch to the east of us and was from Utah. Supposedly in the 1920 she imported some mule deer from her families ranch in Utah. This buck had hair that was 1 1/2 long, even on his neck.

Unfortunately we couldn't get any water, Dad had 3 wells drilled...all dry. Finally sold the property in 1950.

A few photos of my grandfathers from the 1950's at the Lucky S mine near Taylorsville Ca.

I don't ever remember the story about why the one buck has only one antler. Wish he were around to tell me...
More reinforcement that this is the coolest thread ever.

My Grandfather, with the one horned buck, was quite a deer hunter. He shot this 191 net B&C buck in Oregon back in 1931 and had it mounted. It hung on the wall of his den until his passing in 1982 and then was handed down to me. The mount was falling apart and the nose was splitting. It had been stained with tobacco smoke too. He did not smoke but did allow others to smoke in the den. I finally got a cape that would work and had the buck remounted.

My Dad told me that Grandpa had killed two bucks bigger than this one. One head, a big typical, had gone to a taxidermist to be mounted only to have the taxidermist busted during prohibition and all of his work confiscated. The other head was a giant nontypical that a guy borrowed to display in a parade. He claimed it was stolen. I sure would have loved to see those bucks.

This is a photo of me in 1962 with a nice Montana buck. Just a budding buck hunter. LOL. My Dad used to take my brother and me out of school to hunt Montana for two to three weeks every year. Some real fun hunts back then or I should say learning experiences. Our teachers were not too hot on the idea though. I'm sure glad Dad took us !
