Hi everyone, I am looking for some help for my dad. He has 10 preference points for Colorado elk. He and 2 other buddies have been sending in for years to try and get a good tag. Now his 2 other buddies both have cancer and are not interested in going again. I'd like to try to get my dad on a decent bull as he has never gotten an elk. He is 65 and in decent shape yet. I told him I would go with him just to help him out. I'm just looking for any info that someone is willing to give me. I've never elk hunted before we are from WI. Also, I think my dad would be willing to go thru an outfitter if the cost wasn't too ridiculous. Thanks.

I'm not really sure what his limit is, I haven't really asked him what he would spend. He doesn't even know I'm looking into this for him. He just mentioned that he would like to try and get an elk with the points he has, and said maybe he should try to go through an outfitter.

An outfitter is going to run quite a bit depending on the unit. One that I know of charges $10,000 for a elk hunt but there is a good possibility of shooting a 400" bull. I talked to one a few years ago when I had my unit 61 muzzle loader tag and his was $3500 but I am sure he has gone up a little, but then it would take a non resident 20 points to draw this unit.

So for a ball park figure I would say a outfitter will run between $2500-$3500 dollars in a unit for a hunt no matter what the weapon.

There are two ways that I would really approach the idea of where to hunt. One would be to go to the satistics page on the Colorado web site and research the number of points needed or find someone that has access to Eastmans MRS and see what units take 7+ points. I say 7+ points just for the reason that he would have much better odds putting in for a unit that only required 7 points than one that says it takes 10.

Then once you have a few units picked out just do a google search for "Colorado unit XX outfitters" and that should give you a few outfitters to check out.
