Ricmic, I haven't totally given up on that 66 hunt. Will wait for final assessment of the winter damage. Was meaning to PM you about that.

I do want to burn the elk points too though. It's part of my exit strategy from these point schemes before they all collapse.

What do you mean collapse? They are making a lot of money on points, much more than on selling tags, right?

Every state has morphed their systems to screw high point holders in the past. It never stops. Last year it was Arizona and it robbed my tag from this year. Colorado has already morphed theirs twice since I bought in. New applicants continue to escalate. Colorado point creep is worst of any states. The point creep is out of control. I just expect a major conversion some day to bonus instead of preference points. I intend to burn my points before they do that. It would devalue my points.

The problem is that when you only have a certain number of animals and a certain number of tags with more and more hunters you are going to be fighting a never ending battle with points. At least Colorado is a preference point system and not a bonus point system where you can really get screwed. Utah is one of the hybrid bonus points states where 50% of the tags go to the top point holders ad then 50% into a general draw. That is if the hunt has at least 2 tags but if not then everyone goes into a general draw, only the point holders have a better chance.

The only real fair way is to go to a draw only with no points, just a draw. Then it will depend on just how lucky you can get.

I'll buy another point in CO this year for deer and elk and plan to do otc archery for elk again, unless something else transpires.

For elk this year for me my wife should draw a first rifle bull tag. I am going to hunt archery hunt elk with my 73 year old father again this year. Then go for a type b cow tag somewhere if we still need to fill the freezer.

For deer my father is at this point going to throw 18 points at that 44 - 4th hunt so that should be a great time. I hope he does not change his mind. We cant think of anything better to do with them, the winter has been mild there, and not everyone will get the chance to do that hunt. Planning a self support whitewater kayak in, then pack in, 3rd season mule deer hunt with a good friend that I am looking forward to. He is hunting I will be along for the journey. Again I will be doing all that I can to get a high country archery deer tag. Wife might do a muzzy buck hunt but not sure as I will hunt one year and her the next. We might just have to flip a coin to see who gets to hunt this year lol!

Due to scouting for the wife's rifle bull tag I might hold off another year on pronghorn but either the wife or I might take our points and hunt this year then the other the next as it sounds like they are seeing some better speed goats.

Good luck to all in the draw.

Good luck on that 44 tag the winter has been pretty mild but that tag is not a guaranteed trophy. It is still a tough unit to hunt even with good snow in 4th.
Also what area are you looking at for the high Country Archery tag?

The 44 conundrum!

My father graduated from Glenwood high in 62' and I have uncles, aunts, and my 93 year old grandma live in glenwood so they hunted all over that area since the 40's and my father has taken a few absolutely great bucks over the years with one over 225" nt. If we hunt 44 my uncles/brother/wife can join so that is part of it as none of us will ever get the tag again. Priories will be to have fun and look for a big one. If we do not find one I do not doubt he will shoot a forkie on the last day with the granddaughters and then have dinner with my grandma at her house that night with the family. I just hope he does not do it opening day lol.

If we get a trophy that would be cool but the journey is what we will focus on. So no expectation he is going to take his biggest buck as I dont believe that is realistic but sure if fun hunting them where one could turn up. He wanted to hunt up in the NW corner years ago as his uncle was a game warden up there and he has fond memories of when he was a kid but just does not seem to be the deer up there now. If someone wants to change my mind on that I am all ears but I dont think that on public land there are the bucks up there.

Me I like to hunt mule deer up high every year as a priority so I am a oppertunivore as comes to tags or not sure where I will be. There are 5 or so tags or blocks of units that I like and if I keep my options open and I can usually find a way to hunt above timberline every year but it is getting harder.

I burned my deer and elk points this last year so the plan is just to put in for meat tags. I would like to burn my 4 bear points, but haven't had the time to do any research.

Yeah, heck. Maybe he is smarter than I think and realized the huge mistake he was making. That is trying to plan a wedding during September!

If anything it throws a kink in things for him if things get back on track. Spend that time talking some sense into him about the importance of having an open schedule from Sept-Jan.

My Dad was a doctor. He quit delivering kids just because of that. The winters were cold in Truckee and there was not much else to do.

I'm going on a second season deer hunt but without a tag. I don't have enough points. I'll be the gofer and photographer.
