Can anyone explain what the difference is in a Non resident special permit and a Nonresident Full price permit?

One is 600 and the other is 300 ( after application fee).

What are the pros and cons?

Thanks.

A certain % of the NR tags are set aside for the Special Tags. These tags cost more. The theory being that because of the higher price, fewer non resident hunters will apply for them, thus increasing your odds to draw the tag. Buyer Beware......not always the case. Check the statistics of the unit and look for the number of tags of each type and the number of applicants and % success.

So...just to make sure I'm tracking a "special" permit may just put you in a smaller drawing pool for center hard location? Of course like cowboy said always check draw odds.

The odds are not always perfect either. I should have drawn a Antelope tag that was a 100% draw odd and I didn't draw till the next year.

Some years the odds amy be skewed because of resident tags moved into the NR pool. Once the resident draw is complete they move any undrawn tags into the NR drawing and that affects the odds.If more residents apply for any given area then that may reduce the tags available in the NR draw , since none move from resident pool. It might be wise to check the resident draw report for the area you are looking at also.

Be aware that in Wyoming landowner tags come out of the nonresident pool, so there may be fewer nonresident tags than what is listed. The problem is that it the landowners have their draw before the rest of us get our chance.

I remember talking to Guy a year or so ago about an antelope hunt listed as having so many tags, when in fact, after the landowners got their's there were zero tags left for nonresidents, but nonresidents didn't know that - they were going off what they had seen listed in the prior year G&F draw report. I think Guy will address that issue shortly.

In Wyoming, minimum qualifications for landowner tags are 160 contiguous acres and a certain number of days of that species using the land, e.g. elk days (like man hours). The more acreage, the more tags a landowner can get, there's a formula, but they need someone from Game and Fish to check out their land first. Then, landowner requests go into a pretty easy drawing.

Bottom line: beware of hunts with a small number of nonresident tags.

Landowners in Wyoming could potentially draw every single tag in a given unit for deer, elk, or pronghorn. The LO drawing is conducted first and 100% of the quota is available for landowners. Its possible that even Resident hunters could be left out of the draw if enough LO's apply.

There are a few cases where LO's are taking a pretty big cut of the total available tags in some units.

Deer unit 101 had 25 total tags available, 16 went to residents, 1 to a NR in the max point special, and 8 to landowners.

This is not true hoshour. Resident landowner tags come out of the resident pool, NR landowner tags out of the NR pool. Big difference...

You're right. Thank you for the correction.

However, it is my impression that the nonresident tags are usually most affected because their pool is so much smaller. I'll look into the ratio of nonresident landowner tags to total nonresident tags vs. the same for residents to confirm that. Thanks again.
