Well how was it? Did you make it into Monache Meadows? Interested in finding out what the area looked like this year. It's been dry up there for a few years now. Wondering what the streams and river looked like.

Here's the update. My Buddy took a scouting trip after I went out. He didn't draw a A19 but him and his brother have always been curious about X10. 8 bucks. One 4x4 that was well past his ears. The rest 3x's and one forky who seemed to be late in blooming head gear compared to the rest. Yes, all 8 were in the group. My Buddy is a huge D9 hunter. Piutes. At least one in their party are successful. I relayed my findings of my scouting and gave me the rundown like a biologist. He's a mechanic. Explained why sign was difficult to find. His Piute experience put him in these Buck's bedding and feeding areas. Lots of deer beds they told me. They didn't get pictures of the bucks but showed me of the area. Lush, green, sufficient water. I haven't figured out how to post pictures on this forum.

Jmsz, not only interested but the irony is on my Leatherwall I posted a thread regarding this area. An Ole fly fisherman gave me a volley of information and history. To have good odds, plan on a ten day. Since I shoot Traditional tackle he's interested in seeing how I fair.

Looks like you may just make your way right before season opens. With what my Buddy relayed and the fisherman, I'm trying to navigate between Cottonwood and Monache as my entryway. Only thing is it was many years ago the fisherman frequented the Golden Trout. This is going to be a helluva challenge. Welcome, Challenge.

Toxo23,
Thanks for the info. I will be heading up in the next few weeks to scout. I will report back my findings as well. Maybe get a few pics.

Headed out for opening day. No bucks. Two does and a bear. Monache was over crowded for hunting. Drove to Cottonwood. Way too many people there. In the end I located a bit of a possible Honey Hole. Nice Bear I found amongst the bear sign I was following.

Cottonwood - If you're talking the pass on the way out from Horseshoe Meadows (there are a number of places with the same names in the area, that's why I mention it), yeah, it's the trail that heads up to Mt. Whitney and the surrounding areas, so there are a lot of non-hunters up there.

I'm going up this weekend to do some scouting, up through Trail Pass and heading west, in the general direction of Whitney Meadow.

I'm planning 8 days up there this year (to hunt, not to scout).

I went up to Horsehoe Meadows yesterday. A packer there said that the creek in Mulkey Meadows and another meadow were already dry, I didn't make it up to the spring I went to last time I was there, but I talked to a guy who passed it and he said it was running, but not much. IMO it's not worth running the risk of hauling 100+lbs 4+ miles and 1600ft of elevation gain to find out the water's gone and have to leave.

I'm going to pass on going to Horseshoe this year and go base out of Monache.

I lucked out on A19 but I'm still hunting it for bear. The area I stumbled across holds good habitat for deer and bear. I am going out just before the opener of X10 rifle this upcoming weekend, if not the closing weekend.

I was successful this past Saturday (9/10/2016) A zone South. Right in the middle of rifle season.

Reading through all the posts I was curious how everyone did in A19, x10 and g38? As far as the archery A19 how is thr herd? This area seems more like a migration area and I would think the bucks would be up high for west side or in the Park.

This is a Cal thread. Not to many guys here from Ca on the norm. Bump this up a few times no you will probably get a response.

Well boys I think I may give A19 a shot this year depending on how my draw results go. They give 100 tags and only 4 bucks killed last year for a 4% kill. Sounds low and it is, but it is actually about the same odds as the best D zones for archery. I think one of the reasons the odds are low is thr deer are pretty spread out and up high during the archery season so if you can locate deer you have won half the battle.
