As luck would have it, we are actually going to get a chance to do a backpacking trip into the area we are going to archery hunt. While Im totally pumped to be able to actually get a chance to look at an area before I start hunting it, Im really not sure what to look for at this time of year? Wallows/water seem like a gimmies, anything else? Ive already scoured over the place up one side and down the other to locate elky looking areas off the beaten path.

Look for rubs, and know the difference between them. I.e. Rubbing velvet off, or as a display for breeding. Look for the cows. Where the cows are now, calving, they will more than likely be there when breeding season comes along. The bulls always go to the cows.

Rubs will be from last year as they start rubbing off the velvet in August. The bulls will be hanging out together now until the rut starts. Look for areas with multiple rubs, rub lines. Look for dark standing timber as their bedding areas but don't bump them out of the bedding areas. They may use a wallow to cool off in July so locate wallows that look like they will hold water until fall and mark them on gps.And yes by fall the bulls will be with the cows but not in July.

Clarification......where the girls are hanging out now post calving season is usually where the bulls will come to.. end of Aug ...the dudes come to the girls......at least in my GMUs :) Hope that clears that up a little.

Yep, that fire turned out to be an issue, got forced out of the woods, on a related note, its nice to know that if something is going on that could be a danger to you, the forest service will come looking for you :D

look for your water sources, where you want to camp, which spots give you good glassing and almost as important, which spots you don't want to glass from. Do all of your logistics now and hunt later.
