What's everybody running for empty pack weight for a large, external (metal) frame pack?

I'm talking Large 6000+ cubic inches, equivalent to a large ALICE pack with extra pockets and such.

That doesn't include water bladders or anything else.

Thanks.

My Kifaru DT1 7200ci with Hunter xl lid belt pockets extra straps and a few other accessory pouches and the bikini composite stay frame is a a little more than 7lbs.

Update without all the pockets and water bottle holder right at 6lbs.

SG Solo + Kifaru Longhunter or XTL lid + couple 10L dry bags makes about 6000. I think that is about 5 1/2lbs.

Yikes...I know I'm upwards of 10lbs.

Thanks, I'm going to do some trimming and removal of some excess stuff, so I wanted a reasonable target to work towards.

Sub 6lbs is what I look for, lots of great options with that range.

6lbs 14oz for my first generation KUIU Icon 6000. Big step up from my Alaskan frame pack from Cabelas that I think was in the 13lb range.

I use an REI Mars 80 pack. I got it about 7 years ago and it works great with no issues. Getting a good pack once is a good way to go, but you don't have to spend a lot of money. Mine is 5200 cubic inch so its a little smaller than what you are looking for but it is 5lb 12oz.

Good Luck

3.5 to 4 lbs Unaweep / Talon or Evolution . Sometimes closer to 3 lbs with just a bag or Talon on frame

My Eberlestock J107 with Super Spike Duffel was 9lb 4oz. Looking at selling it and upgrading to a Exo 5500, KUIU IP 7200 or Stone Glacier 7400.

Similar functionality and wayyyyy lighter.

My Kifaru duplex frame with EMR2 weighs a little under 8 lbs. Same frame with Timberline 2 weighs around 7 lbs. My Bora 95 weighs a little over 8 lbs. My recommendations for hauling lots of bulk + 100+ lbs is either a Kifaru or Stone Glacier. The Stone Glacier is a little lighter but you can strip Kifaru straps down or pick a lighter Kifaru bag. Also, Stone Glacier doesn't come in camo and you don't have a giant selection of bags that can be switched out (like Kifaru).

I have the outdoorsmans pack. Its external frame and weighs 7lbs empty I believe. Its a little heavy but when I pack animals out I'm thankful for the strength of it. Its also very comfortable.

I've been thinking about upgrading so I weighed my current pack. Northface 5300 weighs 6lbs. I've been using it for years.

How interesting. I just found an old Alaskan frame pack on Craigslist for $70. Near new condition, just a little dusty. Weighs in right at 6.5#. I read how the different years, sizes, and models of these packs could vary wildly concerning weight.

Out of curiosity, I just weighed by old alaskan frame pack at 6lbs for the frame alone. With the bag added it came in at 11.2lbs. I believe it is this one:

I have the same one and have used it for years till I got my Kuiu.

For a inexpensive pack it does work well. I would take the big pack off and strap on my lighter day pack to it. If I took a animal I could attach the meat to the frame and then put my day back on my front and pack it out.

I still take the frame with me on every hunt, just haven't used it much since I got my Kuiu in 2011. Haven't had to pack anything too far.
