Region h mule deer

Heh guys, I am considering heading out to region h for mule deer this fall. I have enough points to get a tag but haven't made a final decision yet. It'll be my first time to that area! I'm pretty pumped but don't know know what to expect.
I've been doing most of my research in unit 142 along region g. Do any of you you guys have experience in that area? I'm not totally sold on 142 yet so any information would be awesome! Thanks!

Hey Jesse, I'm also from western Mn. We were out there 2 years ago and might go back this year, all I can say is find some nasty stuff as far from roads as you can and glass glass glass. We never did enough glassing when we went that takes practice and patience, but that's how you find them. I look at Google earth almost every night, and I think I pick a different spot every time. Are you doing a backpack hunt or just day hiking?

Awesome. Which town are you from? I'm in morris. My plan was to go out a couple days early if possible and maybe do some day hiking to give me lots of mobility to try and get into the deer. For the hunt I'm planning on backpacking in as far as it takes. How do you suggest hunting it? Backpacking or day trips?

Careful for the grizzlies in H. They're there so keep that in mind.

Last year was my first time hunting Wyoming, I drew a G tag. I moved to Wyoming last January so I can hunt every year now. I set up a big camp and day hiked out of it every day, it got tiring by the end of the week. This year I'm planning on backpacking in a couple miles, not sure of the area yet though. There were a few decent bucks around where we hunted, only saw one real good one. I heard stories from other hunters of big bucks that were just out of a day hikes distance.

For sure! I was thinking there wouldn't be quite as many down in 142 as there would be closer to Yellowstone but I'm sure they are still there! I'll be solo as well so not real pumped about being around grizzlies.

Yep gasman I agree. Backpacking in seems like the only way to do it for a hunt like that. I heard guys say that going opener is a killer because of all the hunting pressure but yet I hate to wait a week or two after its died down and try to find the deer. What do you guys think?

From New York Mills, definitely pack in. And get there a few days early for sure try and find the deer for opening day. Once opening day hit there will be people around and then the deer will be a little spooked of course. We never saw grizzlies there, but some black bear, keep a clean camp and hang your food a ways from camp to be safe.

This here we hunted region F, now that is grizzly infested, saw them every day. I don't think I could stay in the back country there.

I've hunted that area twice, plus a scouting trip. We backpacked in, and this year hiked past two camps that were set up just before the really brutal terrain started. We spoke to a couple guys who thought they were at the end of the world and could just hunt from camp. Maybe it worked out for them, but there was no way that they could day hunt up where we camped because you couldn't get in or out in the dark safely. As it was, my partner shot a decent 4x4 that was spooked right past us by some guys hiking in mid morning. In 2011, I even spiked out from our camp. It was only 1/3 mile from our camp, but 1,300 feet higher. It worked out because I scored on my best 4X4. We were only 2 1/2 miles back, but it was the terrain that limited other hunters, and not the distance. As for griz; carry bear spray, practice fast deployment, and follow other bear aware practices already stated. Especially if you go solo, carry a PLB such as SPOT or Delorme IN Reach, and hunt safe.

Thanks ricmic. Congrats on your buck! Sounds like I will need to spend alot of time on Google earth looking for the nasty stuff. Is there good chunks of public land down in 142 to where I won't have to worry about wilderness and private.? I haven't looked into that aspect of the unit a whole lot.

Last year's hunt was in F, that's more of a migration hunt. But we did see some deer just not much for trophies, but I'm sure they are there. We did see to many grizzlies constantly looking over your shoulder. As far as deer numbers I can't say for sure as it was my first couple times out there, but I've heard they are getting better but probably new be like it used to be.

Another question on H. There is alot of wilderness I'm finding out. Would it be worth teaming up with a Wyoming resident to try and get into them? Or are they infested with resident hunters to the point I'd be better off hunting public anyways? Thanks in advance.

I have been on guided hunts in the wilderness areas of H. The outfitters cover the back country pretty well, and it would be discouraging to bust your ass all day just to get to a spot where a large camp is set up. The only locals we saw in the area came in with horses. There is still a lot of H outside the wilderness areas that can give you a good hunt.
