Hey guys, I have 8 points for elk going into the 2016 season. Primarily bowhunter, DIY backpack in, good shape experienced hunter. Any suggestions for units to look at for this kind of point bank? I don't need specific areas, but would like to have a good chance at a nice bull.

I'd suggest an introduction of who you are for you first post in the new members section, rather than I need info post.

"..but would like to have a good chance at a nice bull."

I think that's pretty much what everybody wants.

Call the WY Game & Fish office in Cheyenne. Once they give you some suggestions call the local biologist & game warden. With 8 points you can probably draw most limited quota areas in the state. Also remember nonresidents require a guide in wilderness areas. Good luck!

This is the bull I took this year in a general area! Officially green scored 363 3/8.

The draw units in the Bighorns are probably what you want to look at for bow hunt that you can draw. Plenty of elk and no grizzlies will make it better for your DIY backpack desires. Every unit in WY can basically produce a good bull, just depends on the legwork on your part to put a tag on one!

I'm very interested in hunting WY next yr. I only have 3 points. I think I can draw unit 51. If anyone has any good info on this unit please let me know? I've also considered just hunting a general unit around Yellowstone. There's a lot of diff units there to choose from. Anyway, any pointers much appreciated! I've hunted AZ and NM as well CO, so if I can be any help let me know as well!

Take a good look at 16. Big bulls coming out of there every year. If you go first season you can finish archery hunting and start bull hunting the next day knowing where the big ones are.

You need more like 5 points for that unit if you are trying to rifle hunt. . Draw odds for last year show nobody with under 5 drew the tag...That being said, You should really think twice about being a non-res and trying to hunt the yellowstone units...For the most part, they area almost entirely wilderness except for some small areas, which you are not allowed to hunt without a registered guide or resident guide.. Also, if you have never had to deal with grizzlies it is not a good way to get started into hunting in WY, because they add a whole other aspect to the hunt. And finally, IMO the units surrounding yellowstone are heavily reliant on horseback hunting. The majority of areas I have hunted surrounding it, I have packed in well over 12 miles before i even begin to look for elk. Just because the units butt up to yellowstone does not mean they are the easiest of hunts. Just food for thought, but you would be better off drawing a general tag and hunting somewhere that does not have wilderness and you can expand you hunting area when you arent finding elk in one spot or another

Yeah 51 went up this year with the creep, mtngiude isn't kidding about them bears. We went deer hunting in sunlight basin this year and ran into bears just about every day, and one on a deer carcass! Got lucky on that one, it just makes it that much more difficult always looking over your shoulder for the bears. And if you shoot better be on the look out, that's the dinner bell. Just my 2 cents

These bears aren't fun to deal with and they certainly aren't something to deal with on your first backpack hunt.
