Ive been building points in Nevada now 6 years on all species and although I fill out all 5 choices on all my species apps and have been for several years, ive still not been able to draw even a deer tag yet?im into Nevada now over $1200 and am wondering what it will take to draw?have been working the odds charts but don't want a "junk" tag now?how low on the odds should a person go by the time the 5th choice comes along?its been a long wait so far and would like to atleast pull a decent deer tag next year?

Unfortunately the one bad thing about a bonus point system versus a preference point system like Oregon is that you can't ever be 100% sure that you will draw a particular tag. The first year my brother and I applied in Nevada, I drew our first choice and he drew our 3rd choice. Then we didn't draw another tag for 3 years. Good luck next year!

If you want a good tag, it can take awhile. But nv has the best draw system IMO and your odds of getting the best tag for each species is better than most states. Also you can find big animals in every unit, but it'll take a lot of work sometimes.

That would be incorrect in both AZ and UT, which are bonus point states. If you live long enough, you will be in the max pool for a given hunt where a set number of tags are reserved. Excepting those hunts which have only one tag that goes to the random draw.

as I apply on nevadas system I pick the best units and worst odds as my first choices and work down to the higher odds units as the most likely 4th and 5th choices that im willing to burn the points for..say for deer with 6 points now,i would think I might pull a tag with say a 20% odd?but I don't want to resort down to too sucky of a tag,,say 101-109,with leftovers?I hope that my number will come next year. as every year you don't know if ya got a good or bad draw number for that particular species.I understand how that states draw system works and hope im close on a deer tag for next year.as for elk,i will stick to only the best units as with a 10 yr waiting period,,im 50 now.ill probly only draw a Nevada elk tag only once in my life so it better be good.does anybody know or have a list of how low of a number that the hunter actually draws as his place in the line?

Be patient and persistant!
It took 11/12 years to draw my first Nevada tag a 081 deer tag, then the next year a great antelope tag,next/ this year a bear tag and a 076-081 elk tag.:0
I have had friends draw great tags sooner and with a little luck you might also.

ALOT of LUCK! That is what it takes a NR to draw most NV hunts. The draw odds are very deceiving because they only show 1st choice apps. There could be 27,000 2-5 choice apps for those tags that dont show up in the draw odds and that is why so many of the not so famous units are alot harder to draw then it appears. Look at how many points the applicants that actually drew tags had. That is the most accurate way to see what you have a good chance of drawing but that doesnt mean you will draw either. keep applying, someone has to draw!!!!!

gear grinder//as I understand it,,when you apply say for deer,,,the computer draws your number,,,lowest # gets the first pick, ect till tags run out,,,more bonus points simply gets you better odds at drawing a low number,,,when your number comes, they run thru all of your choices before next higher # person and so on.So each year you could be really close to a good low # ,,, or if your unlucky, even with a lot of points, you could still have a high #just depends on computer draw?thats why its not fully predictable.thats how I understand it.I will look into musket mans explanation on the not so famus units as 4 and 5 th choicers.thanks musket man.

Your bonus points are squared plus you get 1 entry for your app that year. If you had 5 points you would 26 entry's. Each of those 26 gets assigned a random number and the lowest number is the one used in the draw.

From what friends have told me about Nevada's odds in the draw, you have to apply with Harry Reid.

There are very few if any "sucky" deer areas in Nevada if you are willing to work hard, which a lot of people are not. About the only poor areas are the ones near Las Vegas. You are very mis-informed about the hunting in Nevada if you think 101-109 is a sucky area.
As for elk there are no bad areas, the hard part is getting the tag. As a non-resident at 50 with only 5 points I wouldn't hold my breath at drawing an elk tag while you are still able. But you can't draw if you don't apply.

I thought that areas 101-109 for deer isn't very good as its easy to draw and usually has leftovers even?unit 51 is also a easy draw,,,are there big bucks in those units or are they primarily forky type units like we primarily have up here in Oregon where 67% of all deer harvested are forkys,,right from odfw stats.im sure the smart ones hide out in remote country, but I would like a chance for a "big boy" when I eventually draw a tag down there?is 101-109 a area that you would commit 6 points to draw?as a 4th or 5th choice, that is the most likely choices a person would draw unless he was very lucky and drew a very low hunter number?

So if you are not willing to get to the remote country for a chance at a big buck don't waste your time coming to Nevada. They don't usually hang out next to the road.
I think that could be said of most states.

I do like the Nevada system as well but they have a tone of NR applicants and a outfitter draw. I have five points for most species but have never drawn. There are a few strategies for tags. If ur in a hurry to draw a tag I would leave out the top units and select units with better odds for your five choices.

I usually work my way down on my choice lists,,,primo top units as 1st and 2nd,then what I think are medium units as 3rd and 4th,then my least im willing to take as my 5th choice.Isnt that the smartest way to try?every year you never know if you draw a super low number or a high number as your place in line.what I don't want is to end up with a high number and draw a "more marginal"unit than a year that I draw a good low number?probability of a lower number goes up with a persons bonus point amount, but is a unknown?ive never drawn yet so I don't have "boots on the ground" experience in any of the units,,,just going from info and charts I can find?

in comparison of Oregon verses Utah on deer,im 4 bucks 4 years in a row now in Utah with utahs general tag!!even in utahs worst unit,{box elder} I still got my buck,,,and this years buck was a pretty nice 18" 4x3 that I couldn't let pass.oregon on the other hand has very low chances of "big bucks" in general on public lands in comparison.there are a few out there, dont get me wrong, but,in Oregon forkys are the norm.Is nevadas deer in good shape like utahs or colorados? The only reason I hunt Oregon at all is that resident tags are cheap in comparison to out of state tags.My guess would be most Nevada units would be even better than utahs?
