My buddy and I are leaving for Casper tomorrow night with a couple of unit 25 antelope tags. This was our 3rd choice fall back and basically just an add on to a cow elk tag and mule deer buck tag that we have in the Laramie peak area in the days following.

I have the delorme map, the BLM maps, and the Garmin with the OnXmaps chip and have researched all of them thoroughly. I know its gonna be a tough hunt with just a few pieces of accessible land but I was wondering if anyone on here had hunted this unit and might have some last minute pieces of advice for a couple Oklahoma boys who have never hunted the area.

Feel free to PM if you prefer.

Thanks!

Sounds like you have done your research! Garmin with the OnXmaps chip will be your best friend in these units. Good luck and let us know how your hunt goes!

There is a good chunk of BLM land just off Cole Creek road just east of Casper. The "Hat-Six exit on the east side of Casper turns into Cole Creek road when heading north of the Interstate I-25. Take Jade road off Cole Creek and it takes you right to it. Good Luck!

Today did not go well. As mentioned above, I went to my first choice area today and found it was on fire. There were crowds at the majority of the other areas and the ones without crowds didn't have so much as a semi-fresh dung pile on them. Saw tons of antelope on the private surrounding the BLM and state... Nothing accessible. Rough start.

Yeah BBB. I just heard about that fire last night. Who does a "Controlled?" burn in 35-40mph wind? Stupid lives on!
Because the EPA wont let you burn on a calm day because "there is not adequate ventilation". Then the only burn day you get is a really windy day that you know you shouldnt be burning but it might be 3 weeks before there is another burn day so you go burn it and this happens or you almost get killed like I did a few years ago because I was in a big hurry burning barley stubble after waiting over a week for a burn day and finally getting 1 afternoon to burn that was too windy but it had to get burned so you go light it and do things you know you shouldnt do trying to get it done.

Success! Killed a pretty nice buck (I think) this morning and while I was boning it out another bucked popped over a ridge a few hundred yards away and my buddy tagged out too! 547 yards with my 7mag.. 168 bergers. Took 5 steps and dirt nap!

Good for you. I hunted it years ago but on private land, there are some big bucks in the unit....
I love the look of your buck

Thanks guys! Quick update, after we filled our goat tags on Tuesday we headed a couple hours south to hunt a cow elk in unit 7 and a mulie buck in unit 64. We scouted all day Wednesday and on Friday my buddy shot what looked to us to be a pretty good one. It was his first mule deer and his furthest shot at 476 yards. Given the hunting pressure in the area, it was a trophy to us for sure. We got checked by the biologist for the area and he said it was a very good deer for that unit.

Saturday we went down near Garrett try and fill my cow tag. I had a chance at filling that tag but blew an easy shot at a cow that was with a herd of about 30. I'm planning on going back in December for a late season hunt to try and fill it.

All in all, we were very happy to have filled three of our four tags on our first time hunting there. Especially DIY on public. Wyoming is an awesome place and I appreciate all the tips I got from guys on this forum.

Happy hunting!image.jpg
