Hell All,

I am looking to do an Antelope/Mule Deer combo hunt out in WY next fall and am starting my research now. I will be going with my cousin, and we are new to hunting out west. Looking for a unit that non-residents can draw easily with no preference point accumulated if that even exists. Not looking for trophies but are really looking for the experience and to learn and hopefully bring home some meat. Any recommendations for units with good public land access and a decent success ratio is appreciated. Also, if any tips can be offered would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance.

You will want to look at 1 of the general deer regions you can draw easily like C or Y. There are some antelope units you can draw in them too. They have scattered public land and access issues but if you do your research you can still have a decent hunt. Areas with good public access will take some points to draw.

Took everyones advice above and bought a point. When I went to the WY site though it mentioned something about type? Can anyone further explain this?
You probably already know this and did this but the "bought a point" needs to be done for each species.

Type refers to different hunts in that unit. Type 1 is typically buck. Type 2 is usually a buck tag for different season dates then type 1. Type 6 is reduced price doe/fawn. Type 9 is archery only. ect. You have to look at the regs for each unit to see exactly what each type is in that unit.

If it was me, going out west to Wyoming for the first time with zero points I would choose either Deer or Antelope but not both.
IMO, you won't do justice to either tag. Pick one species, pick an area and apply. Hopefully, you'll learn a lot about western hunting on your first trip. Then later you can do a combo hunt when you garner a little experience out here. Buy point for each and do some research while you wait. JMO

Great post above, the only thing I could add would be to do the antelope first. In my experience an easier hunt to plan and be successful at. And if you fill your antelope tag early you could use some of the time left to do a bit of deer scouting for a hunt the following year (if you draw). I would also buy an elk point this year too, right along with the antelope point and deer point. After a few years of antelope and deer hunting an elk hunt will be the next logical step and by then you will have a few points built up to work with in the draw.

Agreed. Being a newbie myself out west, I did antelope first and was successful. Couple years later, just last week, I got greedy and had deer and elk tag. Came home empty handed. Stick to one species at a time at least for archery imho!
