Vortex question

I'm trying to decide which spotter to buy before my next trip to Colorado in September. I'm a a flat lander from TX that makes a weeklong trip the last several years to WY or CO for mule deer or antelope. I've been debating between the Razor 11-33 and 16-48. From what I've been able to dig up the 11-33 is great for packing but loses sharpness on higher power. Is the difference in these two spotters vast enough to drop the extra $$ ? I haven't found them at any local stores to compare them.

Also, what would be a decent tripod to go along with either ?

Thanks for any info fellas.

Guess I should have mentioned Colorado will be backpacking this year and Wyoming is more hunt from truck.

16-48x65 would be my choice. Easy to pack, great glass and why go with a smaller power now? When you use the lower power you will just want more.

Thanks for the info everyone. Sneakypete are you using the Vortex High Country tripod with your 11-33 ? I looked through another thread and checked a few of them online.

Yes I am. I had both at the range last Sunday, again it is light enough for my pack. It isn't the strongest for say an 85mm scope but for what I need it works. I also like the ball head. I hope this helps you out. My only advice is try the straight and the angled to see what you prefer! I have the angled and if I'd tried both I think I would have bought the straight!

I rented an 11x33 last fall with a Vortex tripod. The scope is great and the fold locks are not so great. I picked up a Razr 11x33 straight with a Promaster from SandS and it works really well. For hunting, straight works well. For shooting field archery an angled scope is preferable (for me).

I have the angled 11-33x50mm vortex and I like it, but I wish I would have gotten the straight 65mm. 33x just isn't enough and for my purposes, straight would be more versatile.

I like the angled for some reasons and straight for others. Angled it easier to glass up and with the scope lower you can switch easy between binos and scope without it being in the way. Straight can be easier to find your target and glass downward. I find it was easier to position my angled as it doesnt have to be at just the right eye height.

Well, I had my mind set on the 11x33 when I found the 16x48 angled on sale for $140 off normal price. So I decided to drop the extra $$. It showed up today so hopefully I'll get a chance to check it out this weekend.

Thanks for all the info
