Planning a trip next fall for DIY OTC Archery Elk hunt. We are planning on camping but didn't know if we had to camp at designated camping ground or can we just camp up a trail. Plan on tent camping not camper. Thanks in advance.

Look up the website for whatever national forest you are planning on hunting in and search for "dispersed camping". Most national forests out here allow it; you can just pull off the road and camp wherever (as long as you don't do any damage with your truck where you pull off). I'm going out this weekend for a quick overnight scout and I'll just pull off at a wide spot near the end of a dead end USFS road and bunk down overnight in the back of the truck.

San Juan NF has lots of different rules, depending on the area. Mostly camping is allowed almost anywhere within 300' of roads. This is really for big group camps. If you are backpacking, you can camp anywhere. PM me your address and I'll get over to our local public lands office and get what they have and mail it to you.
