I found a 1991 Big Game Seasons map and regulations and thought I'd share some info.
Back then area 101 thru 108 early rifle had 2881 tags.
101 thru 108 late rifle had 1921 tags.
071 thru 079 rifle had just one season and it had 4314 tags. Holy crap!
My brother and I hunter those one of those areas every year and it really does seem like those were the "good old days" I just didn't know it at the time.
This is one of those deer from back in the day.http://forum.eastmans.com/images/styles/eastmans/attach/jpg.gif

I dont think so. Apparently ndow uses hunt reports and aerial surveys to establish quotas. I think it may have more to do with that big gold mining operation disturbing migration routes. But thats just my theory.
I'm sure the mining operation has an impact on the deer herd because it is in the middle of one of the major migration routes. Every year that we drive past the mine it is bigger and bigger.
Also this ongoing drought has to be a major factor in the deer numbers.

I agree, i know the ndow did a study and wrote a report on the impact of the mine but i never read it. I should dig that up again and see what they concluded. Between that and the drought its no wonder quotas are down

I read the report. It'a quite long and shows migration routes of collared deer and the mine is right in the middle of a major route. Though it does show the deer have been going around the mine to the east and west.

Good luck on the turkey. We might be sending some weather your way, maybe it will stir them up.
Yeah we got some rainy yuck weather yesterday afternoon. So far my vacation turkey hunting not been to good on the hunting. Lifes been getting in the way. Got out once so far and im on day five of vacay. One day was spent putting up a chain link fence and new soffit at my house, another was daddy daycare day. Then another was spent cleaning house and yard work and yesterday i used the weather day to put up insulation in the basement. So been productive just not the hunting productive i was planning on but got to take the help when its there. Tommorrow and tuesday of my vacay are wide open for hunting.

Yah i saw those routes. Was there anything in that report about the deer turning around and heading back south after they got to the mine or did they always just go around?

I tried to go to a gun show today and when I got there it had been rescheduled and they were having an outdoor show that was pretty lame for the most part and I think I wasted atleast $5 of the $7 to get into it. I did get to see some cowboy action shooting (CC would have been proud of me lol!). So I did the only thing I could do. I went to Cabelas and bought a shotgun! Its a very clean Winchester model 12 in 12 gauge made in 1923. I saw it there the last couple times I was at Cabelas and decided if it was still there today it was going home with me!

They are already heading south because this is a migration route out of the Rubys. There are mountains with cover on the east and west sides of the mine they probably use now.
Only twice in the last 35 years have we had enough snow during hunting season while we were there to make the deer start moving out.
Once there were heading out from the south end of the Rubys going mostly southeast. The other time they were heading out of the East Humbolt mountains going south towards the Butte mountains across the sage flats.
