im looking at getting a rifle made, I love the .270 cal, just love it. i don't reload either so kinda want one made in a common cal. 7mm ,270, .280 even. any recommendations on who to go through? is it worth getting one custom built?

There are a lot of good custom bolt gun makers out there. They run all over the place for cost, though.

What's your budget and intended purpose for this custom?

I used Sawtooth Rifles for my .300 WM build last year. I am happy with mine so far. I let my old man and wife use it last year so it killed 3 elk, and 2 muleys. I haven't tinkered with loads a lot yet. I am still in the process but so far I have gotten .75 MOA out of it. I am sure it is capable of better. I just need to test some more loads this summer. Matt is a cool dude and he is reasonable. Worth checking out. He has a website. His shop was in Fort Collins but he moved to Idaho last fall.

I think snowy mountain rifles in missoula does a good job. I've used them before just for some gunsmith work but they have been easy to deal with and have a reasonable turn around time. I would use them if I was considering a custom build.

here's my dilemma... I am currently using a pre 64 mod 70 .270 and have since I was a boy, it has always; always been a tack driver and has killed without fail... except for one time... I wont tell that story ever again though.... I've always thought getting one made custom for me would be awesome! I have a .338 and it just sits in safe, I enjoy shooting my pre 64 way to much to put it down. as im writing this im deciding if I should put that money towards a new custom gun or buy me another pre 64... hmmmm dangit!

tough to beat a nice smooth pre 64! I have had guns built by oregunsmithing ,wayne York and weaver rifles ,kevin weaver . been happy with both . kevin is actually working on a 280 Ackley for me right now. and is it worth a custom well I think that's in the eye of the owner, because I have some factory rifles that just plain shoot too!

If you like the pre 64 so much and it shot so well for you, just rebarrel it!

Very tough decision, it actually is going to come down to what you really want. I like the idea of getting another pre-64 and customizing it. Custom made rifles can be absolutely great if you have them build for you and what you really like and want. If you do not mind laying out the money or already have money designated for a custom rifle I would go that route. As for calibers I love the .270 but I love a 308. as well as a 300.win. mag. your not going to go wrong with any of them and your going to love any of them in a custom build. No much help I know. ( either way get a new gun :)

I have had quite a few custom guns built and there are lots of different things you can do to save money and weight options and how far u plan on shooting it. I would recommend a custom rifle if you plan on getting into long range shooting. If you plan on just hunting out to 400 yards i personally think a factory rifle is just as good for that. You can get a factory gun and have the bolt fluted or have a full accurize job done on it for $400 you can take off factory stock and put a different on one and have it dipped or have the factory one dipped its all what u want. I have a couple good friends that build rifles and all of them have shot 3" groups at 600 and 5-6" groups at 1000 yards. They do some great work. If you have any more questions let me know.

If you are looking at getting an accurate rifle built for LR shooting, this article is very interesting.

http://precisionrifleblog.com/2015/04/15/how-much-does-group-size-matter/

Granted it is a simulation, but the final conclusion is reading the wind is more important than those last few 1/10" off a group size. I just got my new rifle today, had it built off a Rem 700, and old McMillian stock I already had. Added a new trigger, action was worked and custom barrel in 280 Rem, so you can guess my 2 cents, of course get a new rifle!

Ivory Tip my partner just rebarreled his pre64 264 with a Lilja shoots great now. I saw him miss two great bucks before the new barrel. I can still see him throwing his hat down!

You could look for a newer cheap pre 64 style gun for the action and build on that. I know cheap is a relative term, but probably less expensive than going with something in the collector category. I'm currently waiting on the last of the parts to become available for just the build, mine will be in 300 WSM. Not near the options available for M70 vs 700's, but I like the M70 action and safety mechanism better. Besides, I think everyone has a modified 700 sitting in a closet now days. [emoji6]

personally, I like using my rifles as tools, not show pieces. So wherever you fit in there will decide custom or factory or improved factory.
