I recently purchased a Garmin Montana 650T and am looking at picking up a landowner chip for an upcoming hunt in Wyoming. Has anyone had any experience with the onXmaps chip or do you have experience with any others that you would recommend?

The onXmaps Website says that it shows BLM and state land along with landowner information which I like

It's a great tool. I don't have any others to compare to. I really like that it tells you units for each species as well. You won't be disappointed.

It's a must have, if I wouldn't have had it in the back country this year I might still be there! Got me back to the trail many of times. Like he said, you won't be disappointed.

Easy to use, super handy for figuring out who owns what. I use mine a lot when finding the owners of farms/fields I want to goose hunt. Of course, its a great map too and you can use it on your computer to set waypoints and points of interest.

do they make one chip that would have more than one state on it. It would be nice to have wyoming, colorado and montana all on one chip.

I believe that they do still sell three state combo. MT/ID/WY is the only one that I am aware of. Just like everyone else says, the chip is worth every penny! Just make sure you update it every year to see the boundary/landowner/access program changes as they do change quite often.

They do make regional chips with more than one state but I believe it doesn't have landowner names. If you go to their site it shows you the differences between a state chip and a regional chip.

A well needed tool for hunting an unfamiliar area or finding new spots. I have been using the chip for 3 years now. The peace of mind is invaluable especially if you are hunting on the border of public and private.

The chip will help not only during the hunt but also for scouting. I use Base Camp (Garmin software that comes with your GPS) and land ownership chip to find new spots on your computer. They do offer a overlay for Google Earth that will show landownership but it cost $40. I'm too cheap and I try find the boundaries myself by looking at roads and fences on Google Earth. It works for me so far.

Retterath, do you have any experience in the WILMA application that can be downloaded from the SD GFP? It is free to download it onto your gps, and I'm curious if it is as detailed as OnX or another product.

I do have the game and fish app loaded to my phone and it just has walkin or blm on the map. It's not even close to the trax or onxmaps chip.

Remember they don't have ALL property boundaries. Had problems with my CO the other day. That was a first though. Otherwise has been great. A couple minor issues with GPS versus fence lines but that could be landowner issues.

I already posted this on another thread, but one thing to remember is that the ownership status is not always correct. This depends on data from county maps and these are not always current. Sometimes takes months to get the maps updated when changes are made.

Case in point....Our county made some minor changes to some of the rural road numbering, mine was included. When I used my auto GPS and put in home as my destination, "No such address" showed up for several months. Finally got fixed.

Just sayin.............

I was reapply surpised when onx maps decided to add the walk in hunting areas to the chip so I sent it in for an update. I used it on a hunt in KS and they did show some of the walk in areas but not all the ones in the state hunting atlas so that was somewhat disappointing to find out after paying for the update and not getting what was promised. Especially considering the data can be downloaded from the KDWP website for free instead of paying onx maps.

Did anybody try a onx map in Wyoming last year? Did is show walk in areas?

Wyoming Hart,

Sure can. If you bring the chips/cases in we can swap you out with the new chips. We also have the update cards available so you can do it at home.
