It's because of the net and magazines pushing certain units as blue chip, etc. All it takes is one or two people killing a good buck or bull in a unit and posting it. Then everyone and his MIL puts in for the unit and it ends up being a max PP unit in the next year or two. People just don't understand that the chance of an average guy going anywhere out there on a DIY hunt and shooting a big buck are very slim nowadays compared to decades ago when they were on every hillside and just stood there to let you shoot them! It's really too bad that there are so many out there now that can't be satisfied with a good time outdoors whether they shoot something or not and the craze now is BIG or they aren't satisfied!30Hart,
Your assessment of unit 90 is consistent with other reviews that I have read, yet it takes max points with slim odds of drawing. Not sure I understand why.
I completely agree, Topgun. I used to have that mindset, but over the years I've learned that the HUNTING is more important than the HARVESTING. Sure, I'd love to kill 200" bucks every other year. But I'd rather have food in my freezer to provide for my family. My kids light up when they ask me what's for dinner and I say deer steak or elk steak. The antlers hanging on the wall are forgotten about by everyone but me. My girlfriend actually cusses them when she's dusting the house. It's really too bad that there are so many out there now that can't be satisfied with a good time outdoors whether they shoot something or not and the craze now is BIG or they aren't satisfied!
Good point Colorado Cowboy as I am a recent testament to your statement. This is very hard to do and I even hired a scouting service. Guess I should of just hired a guide...but even that doesn't guarantee success. One day I will start thinking like the 'ol timers...I hope. I'm getting closer. The older you get the more and more you learn. But I understand the "Young Bull" mentality cause I've used it over and over with limited success.IMHO it really boils down to knowing the unit you want to hunt. I know that's not always possible, but nothing beats "boots on the ground"! Like I said in my earlier post, I hunted 74 for antelope for years without seeing many deer, just a doe or 2 here and there. One year I just changed my pattern a little and discovered a small area that held some great mule deer bucks. Every year I hunt 74 for antelope I check this area and the deer are there. It is part of unit 90 and I have never drawn a tag for it yet...even with max points. Maybe 2015 will be my year
I can't imagine applying for a unit with the intention of doing a diy hunt and never having been there. I have hunted several new units here in Colorado and Wyoming, but I have always scouted them first, before applying for a tag. Sure I'm retired and have more time than most guys, but this is the only way I'll do it. The only exception is if I go with someone who has hunted the unit before.
Just sayin.............
Is there even one unit that is better than G?90 is one of the most over rated deer areas in the state. It has the same reputation that 128 did. For whatever reasons, the glory years are gone, but people refuse to give up the dream. I've goat hunted in 90 every year for the last 6 - 7 years. I've spent a lot of time scouting and hunting everywhere out there. I've seen a fair number of deer, but only a couple were trophies. I hunt the western side of the state every year and would take a couple of those areas over 90 hands down...
Take your 9 points and put in as a group with your best hunting partner with 2-3 points for unit G. You should average out high enough to draw. You'll have a better hunt with a good friend than holding out for a solo hunt in one of the "max points" units.I am new to forums and am looking to use my 9 points for a rifle Mule Deer hunt. Looking to do DIY on public land. Does anyone have any good suggestions on a unit to start researching that would be worthy of 9 points? Any suggestions would much appreciated.
Yup this is what I intend to do with my max points. Heck I got a couple buddies with zero, even that should work.Take your 9 points and put in as a group with your best hunting partner with 2-3 points for unit G.
