Free bore/bullet jump issues

I recently picked up a Browning A-bolt stalker, 300 Win mag, not having owned one in the past and it being free, new in the box I figured I had nothing to lose. That was until I shot it, nothing worked with loads at the recommended max C.O.A.L. of 3.340". Finally I found the lands and grooves, seated the bullets out to 3.580" and my patterns (6"+) turned into tight groups. Thankfully I was able to remove the nylon block in the front of the magazine so my loads will fit. Is this a common problem with the 300 Win Mag, or am I just an isolated case?

It depends on the gun mfg. Some do lots of freebore (Weatherby for example) others don't. You just have to find the right combination....looks like you have found it for your gun.

No, I figured further out was my best option. Frustrating that after all these years manufactures are still chambering throats that are too long for most magazine lengths to accommodate. I have custom rifles that can care less about free bore, I think barrel quality has a lot to do with it. I have been reloading for a long time and had a pretty good idea of what the problem was, still it frustrating that long throats are still a problem in the industry. You would think the big manufacturers would get this right eventually.
