Our hunt started on 8-9 with plans and of staying in the backcountry for 8 days the hike in was 11 miles and 2500' of elv. gain opening day was on the 10th we where out early behind the glass and we found two groups of 7 and four of them over 30" the deer where about a mile away with a deep canyon between us so we made plans to hunt them in the after noon after a long hike we started glassing to try to find them and we found two bucks one was a 3x4 supper tall and the other was a 4x4 over 30" wide we made a stalk only to have the wind change to 150 yrds this we on every day when we weren't running from the afternoon thunder storms one after noon we got hit hard hail heavy rain that night i text home with my inreach satellite communicator to check the weather 80% heavy rain thunder storms we went out early about 3 miles to a new basin that looked good only to see a big storm the lighting was about a 20 miles away with in 30 min it was 7 miles away we need to get back with two open hill tops to cross we had to move fast the last half a mile to camp was nasty heavy rain hail and lighting bolts on our tail we spent the rest of that day in the tents i have never been that scared before the wind had the trees swaying the lightning seamed to be cracking right next to use i keep telling my son and friend tony don't lay down and stay on your matts this went on all day and night the next day was a little better but by know the thunder storms had us on edge we hunted for six day hard only to hike the 11 mile back to the truck with our tails between our legs.We made plans to go back for three days ultra light about 30#and we where after one of the big deer we seen before but we where not going to pass anything like we did on the first trip. We left home thurs day night and got to the trail head around 1am and hit the trail at 5 am we made to our camp spot around 10 am we set up camp and a short rest then hiked up to a good lookout that is about 10500 in elv to glass for a few hours with nothing in sight we made a move to another basin hiking just above the aspen when my son spotted a buck we made a crawl to where we could not go any farther my son says its 80 yards i ranged the deer one more time 78yrds with a slight wind in my face i looked at my son i can do this i made this shot at home many times set my pin drew back on my knees stand up and let that arrow fly i hit him and after a short blood trail there he was lung shot dead deer.We had one more tag to fill but we where done our focus was getting the deer off the mountain my pack out was over 100 lbs and my sons was pushing 80 lbs the 11 miles hike hurt but with a smile. This hunt was one of the hardest hunts we have ever done but this is what we live for success in the mountains
