Thought I'd start a new thread, I placed my cameras out two weeks ago and plan to check them this weekend. I saw lots of buck tracks every where I went, so looks like its going to be a good year again.

last year was my first time hunting d14 and I didn't have a chance to scout and had too much going on so I only ended up going out 2 days and i tried thomas hunting ground trail off the 38 and not only didn't see any deer i didn't even see any signs of deer. This year i plan to scout half of august and all september, I'm thinking of trying the north end by lucerne valley around horse springs road. last year i saw hunters parked along 138 by silverwood but according to my map that is a no shooting area am i mistaken? or do the wardens not care?

Hey Sawfish, the east end of the San Berdoo Mtns have been getting some rain. My cameras captured at least 3-4 different rain storms in the last two weeks. The weather is much different in the mtns compared to the valley below where they didn't get any rain the last two weeks.

We haven't had rain in Orange County in forever! I was in Louisiana last month, and it rained more in two hours than it has rained here in over a year! Hope you guys do well this year. I got drawn for X-12 and had already bought a B-2 tag for Blacktail. Hopefully I will be able to get my three species of deer in one season with a handgun this year.

Hey all new here to D14 never been hunting in this area. I have been on some fires in this area in 2006 and am somewhat familiar with this area. I was looking to find any insight or good ways of getting a buck down. i have scoped this area 1 time so far and have been looking at maps for a plan of attack which has been going well so far. Any pointers for a first year hunter and also a first year hunter in D14 would be a super big help. Thanks!

Welcome partner, sounds like your on the right track. Scout scout scout are the best ways to find deer. If you don't find lots of deer tracks in the area then keep looking. That's usually what works for me, if there is deer in the area they will leave tracks.

Holy crap yesterdays opening day at big pine flats was like disneyland. I camped overnight friday and woke up saturday morning around 5, hiked out about half mile or so and found a nice ridge to glass from as the sun was rising. next thing you know i see one orange hat and then another orange hat and another and then the atvs start showing up, by 11:00 am it was a madhouse. The thing is the spot had tons of tracks and i saw a huge doe (running for her life) and I'm sure it was packed because it was saturday and opening day but I'm thinking if i take a day off of work during the week and go back to that spot whats the chances deer are still there after all the people and quads blew the spot up

Very good chance you will see deer during the week in the same area, especially later in the season when does come in heat. Your hunting a good area and one that I hunt once or twice a year.

.

So on my 4th and final day of hunting I saw this guy around 80 yards away and let one go, he took 2 jumps before he took a header into the dirt. I know he isn't the biggest but considering I was alone and on my first deer hunt I feel proud. After quartering him out and 3500 decline in elevation with 6 miles between me and my truck I was finally able to pop that cold top and put this beauty on ice! Good luck to the rest still trying to fill those tags!

So i was planning on going hunting for 6 days in D14 . On the first day i was amazed by all the deer I was seeing. I was a little scared seeing as some people on here have been saying they are not finding deer or tracks. But when all i was seeing was doe's with there fawns i was getting optimistic. So as i came up over the ridge i saw a buck standing broadside around 150yards away, seeing as this was my first deer hunt ever and i was doing this solo my heart jumped out of my chest. As i pulled my rangefinder up to get a read he took off like a bat out of hell. i stayed on the buck for the rest of the day with no luck. Being a little down i chose to try different locations the next 2 days. But with only seeing does and tracks at the other 2 locations i decided to try the first spot again seeing as in the first 3 hours i saw a buck. On October 17th i started into the first location and was yet again surprised by all the deer movement. Even though there were alot of deer none of which were bucks. so i decided to go for a hike well a 9mile hike and after not seeing anything to promising i took a nap just like everyone says to in the youtube channels. at around 1230 i woke up and decided to head downhill seeing as the wind was in my favor. Not more than 50 yards from were i was taking a nap so was this guy . I had pushed him out of his bed and right into my line of fire. so without hesitating i aimed and let one fly. He took 2 jumps and took a header not more than 30 yards where i hit him. Needless to say i am very happy for going out my first time solo and taking this buck. I am more than thankful for everyone who i have asked for help and they replied and gave me a thought of what i should do. Know to start planning my AZ mule deer hunt, my CO Elk and Mule Deer hunt, MT white tail and my UT Muley hunt on top of my 2 CA deer hunts! Happy hunting
