I agree with woodtick. The 700 is the best action out there. I have several model 700's & they are my prefered rifle. I have a 700 SPS Stainless in a 300 Win Mag. It had the Xmark pro trigger, when I learned about the recall. I bought a new timney & changed it out. You can buy straight from timney. A black one is $134 & a nickel is $144. They are adjustable from 1.5 - 4 lbs. They will pre-set them where you tell them to. My advice to any one having problems is to start changing out parts. Put a timney or jewell trigger in it. Replace the barrel with a hart or shilen. Replace the stock with a Boyd or McMillan, ect....

Heck, if you're going to replace everything except the action...just buy a semi-custom rifle, Kimber/Nosler etc. Probably cheaper in the long run. And the Winchester has a 3 position safety that allows you to unload with the safety on. The rear position locks down the bolt handle. I think Rugers have a Winchester copy on theirs now, after several accidents with their old tang safety.

If you already have a gun with problems, upgrade it is all I'm suggesting. The action is the most expensive component. If I get ready to buy another firearm it will be custom. Predator action, jewell trigger, mcmillian stock & a hart barrel.

The Model 700 action is excellent. However, apparently its trigger ain't so good. And that is a huge concern. But I will write that the Model 700's, older ones at least, were damned good rifles with legendary accuracy.

I've never experienced a failure to feed or extract with my Model 700 & I've owned it for 40+ years.

Regardless of how good the Model 700 action is, if its trigger makes it unsafe, it's worthless.

Were I to buy a new rifle and cost weren't an object, I'd buy a Sako, provided the new model's action is as good as the AV action. If I couldn't afford a Sako, I'd go with Tikka.

I know that many hunters love Mauser actions, and deservedly so. But we can't forget that that technology is about 125 years' old. But then again, the M1911A1 is over a hundred years' old & in my opinion, as a self-defense gun it ain't yet been bested. The Pre-'64 Model 70 Winchester deserves a spot in the Hunting Rifle Hall of Fame that ought to be created to honor great rifles. But the reality is that rifles, like most inanimate objects -animate ones for that matter- are determined subjectively. What works for one is all wrong for another. That's why I never belittle another hunter's rifle. If a hunter's rifle SAFELY kills game, what more could be asked of it?

I do own a 20 year-old CRF feed Featherweight. It is a good rifle. It does kill deer. But in my OPINION, I think like the Model 700 action better. I can see how others have a very different opinion. And I am good with their opinions.

I replaced everything but the action on my 700 STW but had it trued.

Rem SPS, 600
Stock, 400
Barrel 400
Action/barrel work, 260
Jewell trigger 200

So far it's a 1/2 minute rifle to 600 yards, the furthest dots I've shot so far.

Of production rifles today, the weatherby mark v action is probably the "best" when all aspects of are taken into account such as bolt throw, locking lugs, pressure release, and shear strength. Any action that can stand up to 200,000 C.U.P has to be in the discussion.

Too bad that todays Remingtons have gone south with their quality. I do have 2 of the newer 700's that are nice now that I've changed out some of the factory components. First to go was the new triggers. Replaced with Timneys which are superb. The older Remy 700's are sooo much better than the current models. Even the old Rem 78 Sportsmen's and the Rem 788 were shooters and were bargain priced. At one time Rem. used "HART" barrels on a few production rifles. Doesn't get better than that!!! At least we can feel good that Remys are still at present made in USA and not China (UGH!!!!)
