The weather shouldn't be that bad, but you're in the big mountains and need to be prepared for anything from real cold and snow to pleasant temps during the day. Up high even in September it will be cold at night and you'll need a good pad and sleeping bag. Montana actually just got 18" of snow yesterday, so you never what what you will run into in the mountains any month of the year!!! Also, you need to be in good shape, have well worn in boots and take care of your feet or you won't be going far. Cell phone may be poor to nonexistent and you may want to look into renting a satellite phone for the trip. Lastly, be bear aware and insure you follow all the requirements to hunt in the NF safely out there so you don't become a statistic. Have fun and good luck!

Lol! I here ya, this is my first trip also. Gets pretty spendy buying it all at the same time. Trying to buy the best I can afford and it still is expensive. Would have been nice to plan ahead a little, like a couple years so you could ease into it. But I am not good at that. Lol!! Good luck.

Hey Congrats on the marriage and Hunting Moon. I hunt region H every year and the best advice I can give is to be in the best shape you can be in. Those are some steep mountains. And get the very best gear you can afford, boots, rain gear, base layers, outer layers, optics, everything. The weather should be pretty decent that time of september but you never know, last year it rained/snowed about everyday I was up there. So you have to be prepared. If you have any other questions just let me know. Nice to see your from West Virginia, that is where my dad is from.

Thanks hunterman, what do you usually pack for clothes that's my main concern, I'm gettin pretty decent equipment, tarp tent scarp2, vortex optics, tenzing& eberlestock packs, I'm gonna try to get my uncle to lend me his msr reactor stove, but clothes I'm not sure what to take.... I got first lite northbranch soft shell pants but am afraid those may be to hot for hiking , your dad made the right call moving to wyoming lol that's the ticket

I will shamelessly plug the next issue of EBJ. Lots of great backcountry stuff, including the start of a series for rookies.

I wear the Core4Element clothing, it works really well and fits me perfect. (I have a hard time finding clothes that fit because my legs are bigger around than my waist) But I have no complaints about there clothes. Gonna get me some Kuiu baselayers this year, heard a lot of good things about them. Make sure you bring good rain gear, nothing spoils a hunt like getting wet. And bring plenty of socks. Having fresh socks to put on just makes a man feel good. LOL. Sounds like you have about everything you need. Bring 2 methods of making drinking water, you can never be to careful with that. Just make sure you dress in layers, so you can add clothes when it is cool and take them off when you get hot. My dad said the same thing about moving to wyoming 45 years ago. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

High country Mule deer is a great book but Mike's new book Mule Deer hunting tactics has more up to date info on backpacking and clothing since alot has changed in those departments since his first book. David Longs book Public Land Mulies has alot of great info too.

I second Long's publication. Very good, indeed.
