Hi there guys. I'm going to be hunting antelope near Gillette in October. I've always dreamed of killing a western whitetail so I was going to give unit 10 a try (the leftover tags for Unit 10-3). Do you have any recommendations on where to look? Or any private ranch owners that may offer hunts for a trespass fee? I'm not looking for a monster buck. Just a representative whitetail, some fun and some good venison. Thanks so much for any advice!

Actually you can hunt areas 10,11,12,13, and 14. But it has to be whitetail only in those areas. I have had that tag a couple of times. There is a decent amount of public land in those areas. But there is alot of Walk-In hunting areas on private that allow hunting for whitetails only. You will have to go on Game and Fish website and look at the Walk-In atlas for this year and see where all the land is that's enrolled in it. We have always hunted down by Manville or Lusk. Lots of public and lots of Walk-In areas. Most of the landowners won't let you hunt until the mule deer season is over on the 14th or 15th of October as most have paid mule deer hunters. Most areas in the Walk-In open the 16th of October and run til the end of November. If you are on BLM or State ground you can hunt from the 1st of October til the end of November. I have found the best hunting and minimal amounts of pressure towards the end of October because most hunters are still chasing elk or mule deer around and not yet hunting whitetails. It can get crowded after November 1st but hunt the weekdays and it's minimal pressure. Good luck, it's a fun tag and neat country.

My buddies and I did this hunt about ten years ago just north of Lusk. We hunted the area in mid to late October and all of us filled our tags but none of the bucks were very big. Did see one buck pushing the 150 mark but most were 2 to 3 year old four by fours. Decent hunt to add to an antelope or mule deer hunt if you will be in the area, not a good tag to travel a long distance to just hunt whitetails, there are much better areas and states to choose from.

You won't see a whitetail in 10. If you're getting that tag most landowners WILL allow you to hunt their property for whitetail. Check out 11, you won't regret it.

If you know where to look you will see a whitetail in 10! I shot a 147 gross P&Y whitetail with my bow in 2009 in area 10. They are around, just hard to find. Don't be afraid of the little sections of public that follow creeks or just off of creeks. They will hide there all day out of the sun. I watched my buck first thing in the morning walk up the creek with 4 other bucks and a few does. I let them bed down after it got hot, then put a half mile sneak on them because i knew they would lay down out of the sun for a few hours before they have to move. Snuck within 60 yards of them, and when they came out i shot him, he ran about 100 yards and down he went. I think alot of people get impatient and have to go after a buck when they first see them in the morning feeding! They are on the lookout and paying more attention then. Having spot and stalked and shot a few deer with my bow, it's way easier to let them bed down first and then sneak on them. They won't move for a few hours until the sun hits them and they get hot. Seen it hundreds of times. I shot a 29in. mule deer buck at 6 yards with my bow using the same tactics i just explained. I snuck within 20 yards and that was it but couldn't get a shot as there was a dirt bank in front i couldn't shoot over without him seeing me. So i waited an hour right there, when the sun hit him, he got up and fed my way towards some other shaded cuts in the bank. He walked out at 6 yards in front of me and stopped when he seen me, but i was already at full draw and let it fly. No buck is ever gonna jump the string at 6 yards! Try it sometime, works like a charm. Oh ya, and watch that wind!
