Hi everyone. If I am reading the Wyoming points system correctly, in theory I should be able to Draw a Type 9 non resident elk tag in unit 37 w/ the 6 pts. that I have now for the 2016 season. I realize things could change for next year so I am just comparing 2015 numbers to make sure I am not missing something. Am I correct in my interpretation? Thanks for any insight.

When you look at the points to draw any hunt last year remember that things can change a lot, especially if the winter has been good.

In Wyoming, a lot of guys that were building points decided to jump back in this year. I saw points required on some hunts jump 2 and even 3 points.

The 2015-2016 MRSs will reflect that jump up, so pay attention.

Not a stupid question at all; It's the "Members Research Section" of the Eastman's magazine. Well worth the price of admission. It really is what has kept a bunch of us as subscribers to their magazine, at least one of the reasons.
They do a bunch of leg-work for us on most of the western states and offer valuable research into hunt planning. I study the results they publish for the day I hunt some of those states.
It's only available to subscribers though.

Thanks AKaviator. Great to have a place to go and get this hunt planning info. I've looked into a few states and it certainty takes a lot of time. I've been reading the AK regs recently, would love to hunt moose there.

Yes, its possible to draw a general elk tag without points.

Most limited draw type 1 elk tags need points to draw. For the exact odds you'd need to read the odds reports on the WY fish and game site.

For the 2015 WY type 1 GEN elk, it took "Less than 2 pts." for a 100% draw. I have never seen if they do a better breakdown than that, i.e., does it take 1.00001 or 1.9999 pts. The general elk tag has had a very slow creep, because the point bankers are unlikely to jump in just because of a good year. The most likely thing that would change these odds very quickly is if Game & Fish greatly reduced the number of NR tags available for the draw. My next WY elk hunt will be in 2017, and I'll have 3pts. by then. Should be golden. Good luck boys.
