Wyoming Region G- How to get away from the horses?

I'm planning to draw a Wyoming Region G tag this year and I am looking for insight into places I can get away from the horse traffic. I plan to hunt solo and pack everything in on my back. I've researched the unit quite a bit and there seems to be a lot of talk of using horses and plenty of outfitters around. To help reduce my odds of seeing less people and having a better chance of killing a great buck I would like to shy away from the horse trail areas and get into some harder to get to areas that horses can't necessarily go. Any info or insight would be greatly appreciated.

I plan to get away for a scouting trip but my only time to go would be in April...Is this entirely to early to see any bucks? I may just drive there to get a lay of the land but may not be able to get anywhere with the snow? Thoughts?

Also, does anyone have any advice on the archery season? I've heard there is much less pressure and it is a time to be us there before the bucks get pushed back into the timber...

How hard is it to find water up high?

Thank for the help!

If you're not familiar with the area, might be a challenge. Numerous times we've bushwhacked up ridges and through heavy timber off a trail where you wouldn't expect to see a horse. Other times we've rode as far as you can and then we'd tie off and hike several more miles to scout a basin or drainage. If you're going to hunt the area, expect to run into people.

you wont get away from traffic and people in G...Horses dont need trails to get places, as a former guide, I did most my hunting in places that you never knew i could get horses into. Just the name of the game. . You wont get anywhere in April. . I most likely will still be riding my snowmobile in most the country you would want to be hunting. The snow wont be gone until end of June. You wouldnt even be able to get a lay of the land for the most part, roads will not be open in any of the high country.

I agree with the previous comments. I lived and hunted in G for 25 years. There was a time when it was "very good", before all the publicity. In my mind it is over rated. Yes, it will always produce a good buck or two but as far as quality where you can get away from people, "it ain't gonna happen." Now that I'm a nonresident I don't have a strong desire to return to G and hunt even though I know the country extremely well. I'm one of those fellas who will bank points with the idea(hope) of eventually drawing a limited quota area to escape the overcrowding you sometimes need to deal with in the general areas.

I have hunted G three times and have been lucky enough to take two bucks. I have back packed in a log ways and still ran across outfitters with horses. Getting away from everyone is going to be tough, I thought I could do it and it just did not happen. Some areas of G is really tough hunting and you really earn your deer in these places. I also agree G is a little overrated , but I think it a good area just give yourself plenty days to hunt it.

I hunted one place in Wy a couple years ago and had the first 5-6 miles to myself. Everyone packed way back in on foot and with horses. We found deer and elk without a problem.

We have archery hunted this area for elk in the past, and moose. If there are sheep grazing the area you will not see as much. The herders and their dogs keep the elk at bay. Last trip over we did see one of the biggest mule deer bucks in the wild ever. There is quite a bit of activity in early Sept with antelope hunters and elk archery hunters. There are black bears that cause problems in that area but not deadly problems. Depends on where you go. The forest service also has some cabins you can rent in the area. Some have water and toilets some don't.
