A couple of friends and I are heading west shortly and are wanting to hunt elk unit 85 in Wyoming around the mosquito creek area. It's been several years since they've been and this will be my 1st time going. My question- is anyone familiar with this area and could give us some insight as to how the elk and mule deer hunting is there

It's pretty well hunted by local pressure for sure..the roads make it very accessible...I love it for snowmobiling in winter though! If you have a region H deer tag, mosquito is not where I would spend my time with that tag as a non res. . There are elk to be found in mosquito, but it's an area that gets hit hard by residents during all archery and will get pounded once rifle opens. Just expect other pressure, and try to get high and glass. Lots of timber for elk to hole up in once the shooting starts next week. Good luck!

Spent a lot of time Moose hunting this area a few years ago. Very popular place with everyone, a lot of elk hunters! I'd go elsewhere.

I spent a lot of time hunting elk in Mosquito Creek from 1987 to about 1998. I shot MANY bulls at/near the following location:

43*26'54.63"N and 111*00'16.40"W

I am willing to give you the exact location of my former honey hole, because I am too old to get in there anymore.

When I returned about five years ago for a look see (not hunting), I noticed a lot of local activity near the road including mountain bikers, wood cutters, shooters, etc. But this spot is at least a mile from the road.

Even though there is a lot more activity in the general area then there used to be, I'll bet dollars to donuts you will still find elk at (or near) the location I indicated above.

haha, finally someone gives out their gps location, can't ask for more, hopefully spot doesn't get burnt to a crisp with traffic

Sad, was a good spot. Doubt it will be anymore. I have zero issue with naming a general area/drainage, but really dislike what HPD just did. Great way to trash a spot for the others who put in the work and sweat to find it as well. Share it via PM, no problem. On an open public forum, come on man.

Well I hope a very specific spot you have hunted multiple times is never sent out all over so you can have a better hunt! That's simply not the way it works, it is a great way to make a very small well defined spot a wreck. Which is why others used words like toast and burnt to a crisp with traffic. Wake up. Odds are it will look like a Disneyland for idiots in short order.

My guess, HPD was shown that place by another, who would not be happy, but I may be wrong. Two main ways to process it. It's not anyones spot, as no one person owns it, therefore no right to call it theirs and play the pied piper. Or it is public land and we all own it, so let's put it out there and make it look like Yellowstone on a nice August weekend, aka a crowd.

I'd like to see a forum rule to ban any gps specific spot, or similar pin on a map level direction, on the public forum, out of simple respect for the spot. PM that level of detail or get off your arse and find your "own" honey" hole if you can.
