Looking a condensed version of Wyoming elk regs, Ive been scanning the website for the past couple of days and Im so confused.

Most of my confusion comes mostly from the hunt type and hunt dates, take unit 1, according to the tentative regs, it says hunt type 1, which is full price antlered or any elk, with a open date of 10/15.

Now does that mean that there is no "archery" season and the start date of elk season with 10/15 and that's it?

Little help!!

I think section 4 is the special archery section? This section will list the special archery season for unit 1 if there is. If it's an archery only season, it will be listed as type whatever in the section with the oct 15 date

That's exactly the same confusion I had for the longest time. Finally figured it out... you have to go down under where all the units are listed with their seasons and the different type tags. As laxwyo said, section 4. Just keep scrolling down until you see it, and then everything will make sense.

Click on this link from last years WGFD Regulations on elk and scroll all the way down past all the regular season dates that a person might apply for and you will see the Special Archery Section 3. Read that and scroll down and you'll see all the season date if a person buys an archery permit to hunt the early seasons. The Type 9 A/O is for archery only and does not allow a person to hunt other than the early season. If you still have questions, give a shout and I'll try to help.

Thanks 30-06 and Bdan, its all falling into place!! Looking hard at unit 21 in the Sierra Madre's anyone have any experience archery hunting there? Wondering about the usual, elk numbers (from what Ive read and seen, the numbers look good) hunter numbers, ability to get away from the crowds, accessibility of water (probably backpacking back in a few miles).

The herd in the Sierra Madre's historically holds pretty steady for numbers of animals. Most of the good habitat for archery hunting is in the SE portion of the unit and there's quite a few residents that hunt the forest there, but that's pretty typical for a general tag area. There's also some wilderness in that area that a NR has to be aware of for obvious reasons. Quite a few black bears in the area I hunted last year, which was in the wilderness area. Feel free to PM me and I'll answer your questions if I can.

Good amounts of elk there, but without a resident to get you on the wilderness your not going to be hiking a few miles off the road because in most cases you'll be crossing another road by the time you hit the 1 to 2 mile mark lots of roads. If you call the local warden Kim Olsen she's pretty helpful or the biologist don't remember his name, but they will tell you the same the elk rarely respond to calls due to the pressure and in most cases when you call they run, so still hunting is the best option.

That sounds like the hunt I did back in 2007 in the Missouri Breaks, cow call and the bull run the other way.
