I'm not after a giant, would like to have opportunity to be in elk and chance at decent 6x6. Have experience, hunted DIY state land 2X in Montana and killed both times but that area is a dead zone now. I currently have 7 points. I have done some research but was hoping for some local knowledge to help me out a little bit. I can wait another year or 2 to get into a great unit. I have looked at units 41, 45, 54 which all look like 8 points....would any of these offer good opportunity? thanks!

Area 11 type 9 would be a great archery only hunt or 11 type 1 is also good. Good 6 pts are there, almost all public land.

The type 9 tag in 11 gets you the whole archery season , the type 1 tag only gets archery hunting after Sept. 15. So for archery only hunting that's about 60 total people hunting the first 2 weeks of the season for elk. It is a general deer area but does not get hunted hard during archery for deer. There is lots of good elk ground in 11.

Typically for Montana I went around the 10th to the 20th ish for best rutting action would this be around the time to shoot for in unit 11 with the type 9 tag?

45 has a lot of elk, they have issued more cow tags last 3 years to reduce the herd. More pressure because of it. Great unit as the demand shows. I'm just not sure any unit is worth waiting 8 years to hunt!

I'd think before the 15th when the type 1 tags will be able to archery hunt also. We've had bugling action at the end of Aug. some years. Labor day weekend is never really a good time, too many campers and atv riders in the forest.

I live in Laramie and have hunted the general areas in the Snowy Range, but never 11, specifically. I have hunted very near the 11 border, and know that locally the area has a good reputation. I have a buddy who had a couple of what would have been good shots at smaller bulls last year in 11, but only had a cow tag. Looking around Sand Lake on Google Earth would be a good start. I will say that you'll want to be comfortable hunting in the timber. Not saying that spotting a bull out in the open will be impossible, but my money says you'll be in the timber trying to navigate around dead fall.

Mid September would be ok but the type 1 tags can archery hunt starting the 15th of Sept. After Labor Day weekend would be good. Lots of elk and mostly public land.

Lots of high end and proven genetics in 11. Its been on my radar for a while. Cow management of the area and surrounding would indicate a very healthy herd also. I stay in Colorado but keep track of potential areas in other states very closely :)
