Wyoming Antelope Units 7 & 27

My friend and I have been thinking about going to Wyoming for an antelope hunt in the next few years. I have heard that units 7 and 27 are pretty good and they are on the east side of the state which would save us some driving, but I am really confused on why I keep hearing that I wouldn't be able to hunt on national lands without a guide, if this is true and I don't want to hire a guide where should I hunt? Also what is the average number of preference points needed to draw in either unit.

I know that's kind of a lot but any help is appreciated, Thanks.

You can look up drawing odds on the WY web site. I think those units are pretty easy to draw. You will want to look at the public land and access carefully before you decide on a unit. Most units in WY that are easy to draw or have left over tags have access issues. Not that you cant have a good hunt in many of them just do your research and get good maps. A gps with a huntinggps map chip will be worth its weight in gold in these areas.

27 = 2 points 100%, 1 point 50.6%, 0 point 5.02%

7 = 1 point 100%, 0 point 33.5%

You do not need a guide for national grasslands. I've hunted 7 several times, lots of pronghorn & public land. You will have no problems in this unit.

Watch out for area 7. That area is mostly private land. There are a few big chunks of public but mostly private. The antelope are declining here in numbers a lot as well. Processors usually take in a few hundred goats and this year barely made it over the 100 mark.

Birdhunter,

Good to know I have not hunted 7 since 2005, they have really declined. We always filled our tags in 2 days or less. There is alot of private, but there is alot of walkin hunting. If I remember correctly 7 is about 30% public not including walkin.
