Well I got incredibly lucky and drew a Wyoming unit 3 sheep tag in the random draw. I know how blessed I am to get this opportunity while I am still in my late 20s and I want to make the most of it. I live in Cody and and familiar with the terrain and how steep everything is. I also plan on scouting as much as possible this summer.

My question is what are the best resources to look into for sheep movements in the area, summer range winter range etc..?

Also I have several friends with horses and was thinking of having them drop me off up high with a bivy set up, hunt for a few days and then walk out. Has any one tried this before?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I want to make the most of this great opportunity I have been given.

Congratulations! I applied for area 3 as well as a NR but was unsuccessful for the 14th time. I would definitely recruit some help. Either pay an outfitter or get an experienced friend to go with you. You may not ever get another Wyoming sheep tag! Don’t squander this one! Please keep us updated!

Call the local sheep biologist in the Cody WY G&F office. Usually they'll be up very high in the summer especially the early archery season. There's also some great outfitters in the area. You need names let me know.

I agree with Mackey. You will probably only get one shot at this in your lifetime. Pull out all the stops in order to get it done.

Thank you. I plan on hitting it hard. Is trying to get into the summer range for scouting worth while or should I be more focused on finding acces into the areas they will be in in the fall?

Are you hunting with a bow and gun? If hunting with a bow or early September concentrate on the summer range. If hunting later like October the fall range. The sheep usually come down lower once the snow gets heavy. Also in mid to late October the Rams will be focusing on the ewes.

I had a tag for area 5 last year and took a nice ram on the 18th of August with my bow. The rams were as high as you could possibly get.

Good luck!

Thanks. MaxHunter, I hope to hunt every day I can. I do bow hunt but If I can’t find the sheep up high while I am scouting I might wait until sept 1 to go up with a rifle.

Nunt’butmulys, do you think I is a hunt that I guy in pretty good shape could do on foot or should I be figuring out a horse solution? I checked out your sorry and ram from last year. Great sheep! I would be over the moon with a ram like that.

I ended up killing a nice ram opening day. It was a great hunt and I learned a ton. A lot of sheep, a lot of bear and a lot of rough country, everything you could ask for in a sheep hunt. I will write up a post about it when o get a chance. 427BBB0A-9773-4300-9BE6-17DA1BE5248E.jpg
