My budddies and I are looking to try our hand and at elk and have decided to jump in to cow elk before we start chasing bulls. We figure its the best way to get our feet wet in the elk game...I have pulled draw odds and draw requests...We are looking for early season rifle hunts as our plan is a DIY Hunt. I wondered if anyone here had any knowledge they were willing to impart?

Not trying to high jack your post, but I was thinking the same thing, looking for a cow hunt before using my points on a bull. What ever area would be a good number of cows and possibly a spot for bulls in the future.

I also Dont want to hijack your post, but I'm in the same boat and would take any advice forum members are willing to give! I've been studying draw odds and area maps quite a bit, but experice rules over maps/stats

The two units that I would look at for cow tags with the thought of getting a future bull tag and that are areas with plenty of animals and public land would be 40 and 41 on the west slope of the BigHorns.
