Thanks to all the RMEF members out there. Wisconsin just announced that they will be holding their first elk hunt this fall. While the hunt is for residents only and there will only be four tags available in the draw, I still have a chance that wouldn't be possible without some major help from the RMEF. I'll personally guess that there will be a minimum of 40,000 applicants given the $10 application and $49 tag. A 1 in 10,000 chance of pulling a tag - maybe I should try sheep hunting instead . . . Good luck to any fellow resident applicants.

Our elk biologist says there's and 18 year old bull out there that has killed at least a couple other bulls in his lifetime!

Yeah it is a good start! Ill definitely be throwing my hat in the ring for that hunt. I've deer hunted just south of Clam Lake for many years so I know the area well.

My brother lives in Barron, he was telling me that they expect over 100,000 applicants. Honestly I'd be surprised if it wasn't more. In the end is still a chance, and $10 is a cheap way to try.
Good luck to everyone that puts in!

So you are saying there is a chance?
Same here in Arkansas slim chance, but you can't get a tag if you don't enter. So I enter every year. I know a guy here that has draw the tag twice. Lighting does strike in the same place.

That very cool. Was that old bull planted there or is he an original?

I thought I had read somewhere that the elk in the eastern states were planted to their old stomping grounds to bring the herds back that have been gone.

Yes, most of the eastern states that are receiving elk from the west had elk herds long ago. I know that a lot of the elk that PA has received have come from Yellowstone. The first came on trains, it was that long ago. The RMEF has done a great job on restocking the elk herds in the eastern states.

He's probably right. 40,000 applicants was a guess on my part. If I was betting, I'd take the over on 100,000.

They trapped elk in lower Michigan back around 1995 and released them in NW Wisconsin. I would assume that old bull was born shortly after the first elk were transplanted. Wisconsin is now bringing in some elk from Kentucky to supplement the gene pool and start a second herd a bit further south where the elk don't have to worry about getting eaten by wolves. Wolves have been one of the main factors in depressing the growth of the initial herd here in Wisconsin - where haven't we seen that before . . .

There is always a chance. Someone hit the Powerball lottery yesterday that had odds of 1 in 292 million.

There are only a 1000 or so applicants in KS for elk. For 25 ish tags, but I think 15 go to Fort Riley personnel only. I think our fee to apply is maybe $5? The tag is $150 if you draw. I don?t know much about the demographic comparison between KS and WI, but 40,000 applicants seems like a lot. Hope they get that many of course.

Hi fellow Wi hunters, Would be kind of different hunting elk in Wi With my luck if I win it would be same time as Colorado seasons. I hope the money raised will go to Expand herd and sell more wolf permits. Wolf may be cool, but deer sure taste better. If I get a tag, all you are invited to a elk feast here in central Wi Just bring the beer. Hopping all you get your western tags. Good luck.
