For the storm this weekend?

Well the stars aligned and me and my 17yo daughter ,Emily, finally get to squeeze in a Saturday hunt. She and I have been having the damdest time with managing our time, seems someone else is always doing our managing lately!

I'm certainly hoping to post a pic Sat evening of two exhausted bloody souls holding Emily's first buck. It's certainly bound to happen sometime, kinda like Christmas. Seems the anticipation is as fun as the kill sometimes!

I took a friend out Saturday morning and sat on a migration trail, figured that storm would move them out but it didn't . there were some tracks of deer that had moved through earlier in the week but that was about it, saw 5 does for the morning at various locations. I heard they were moving down some today but I didn't get out. I did see several bucks chasing does the last few days, seems like the rut action was better this season than usual.

Hey boss. We went last weekend and there was snow and rain and cold and everything you look for and we only saw one deer. It was a little fork/spike, but he wouldn't hang around long enough to get lead poisoning. I must say we only road hunted, I thought for sure we would have seen a couple does and fawns trying to cross the road but it was quite depressing; we saw nothing. D 3-5 is new for us so we are just checking out different areas to find an area to our liking; we have yet to find one. The zones we used to hunt have become hard to draw. X4, G1 and C zones. I hunted morman emigrant trail last year to no avail and last weekend we drove North South road and other dirt roads from there to highway 88 and then 88 to 4 on sunday. Im sure we will get it figured out eventually but I thought last weekend was going to be a lock for sure but...
Cheers

The majority of people that hunt d3-5 pray for storms to hit the last week to push the deer out of the mountains to be successful. To me its always been hit or miss trying to time it if it even happens, Way too many variables. I'll take good weather in the high country any day over stormy weather in the thick timber.

Sorry for such a late response to last week. End result, we didn't get Emily a buck, but that's fine.
I'm simply blessed to have my 17yo daughter wanting to be by my side every weekend, and that's perfectly fine by me.
I've been out of town 4 days a week so Emily made plans for Saturday already!
Doves, quail in the am, and turkeys from there until 4,,,,,works for me. If that doesnt work, the bushytails may pay the piper. This should be another incredible father/daughter hunt.
I'll keep ya posted on our success, you do the same alright!!
Have a great weekend guys

Hey goindeep:

I'm trying to plan a backcountry hunt. I've got to get away from the crowds and see some deer. I don't want you to obviously give up your stomping grounds but do you have any suggestions on where to go next year. California is a big state with tons of opportunities that go untapped. I live in Yuba City, ca approximately 45 miles north of Sacramento. I was going to try the Marble Mountain wilderness but I've been doing some research and asking around and I understand that it can get a bit crowded up there with not a lot of animals. Anyway, I assume you spend some time in the backcountry away from people? Thanks in advance....

Retriever- you can send me a pm if you want. I don't know much about the b zones but I would try the trinity's before the marbles. That's just based on what I've read and heard from other hunters. Its usually not too hard to get away from the crowds, just some extra foot work. I live in grassy valley, just 45 minutes away from you. I hunt d3-5 because its close, the deer numbers aren't great but I can spend a lot more time hunting it and learning it which is really helpful. Maps and Google earth are the best ways to identify areas away from roads and trails.

Are you an archery hunter or rifle?
