How have the numbers and harvest been up there? Been thinking about making the trek for a few years.

Should I choose another NW area?

I have to apply for a preference point by March 15th, correct?

Any crazy regs for public land camping I should be aware of?

I won't be going until 2016 BTW. Just starting to plan now.

March 15th is the correct deadline for bonus points,
As far as deer goes, mule deer are the only species that you have to apply to draw points for, Whitetails can be hunted with just a general deer tag.
I can't speak for the 100 districts as I've never tried hunting up there. Some people I've talked too say the forests are fairly thick and dense but that's not from my own experience. I believe the rules and regulations for the 2015 season will be released on March 5th so that should give you an idea of what to expect along with becoming familiar with the rules before you trek out here the following year.

Jordan's Montana MRS is being written now and will be in the next issue of EHJ. He has always devoted some space to deer hunting in NW Montana.

There are good numbers up there but it does tend to be thick in most areas. However, if you can score some private land access that's a different story and you can do very well.
