I am an intrepid Mountain Infantry Soldier from Vermont that has a DIY Backpacker elk hunting addiction. I hunt NW WY every fall, usually successfully, but always early rifle areas (Sep 26-10 Oct-ish trips). My usual haunts are in areas 85 & 84. Well, this year, because my hunting partner was unsuccessful on drawing a general tag, and there were no type 6 tags in our usual haunts. He drew an area 90 type 6 (I picked one up too, in addition to my general). He hunted in a high north facing basin with a pond last year in 90 (for the same reason-no other tag) while I took the year off to arrow a monster moose in VT.
My question is; that far after the rut, will we find bulls near the herd, or will they be holed up away from the ladies? And if so, where would you look on the Oct 15th opener?
Thanks for any help you can give.
Here's a pic of the excuse for not elk hunting last year, he was the widest racked archery moose taken in VT last year:
