Looking for anyone who might have hunted the Wheeler Peak area neat Taos NM. Drew a mule deer tag this year. I have looked at Google Maps but cannot determine the best access routes to Wheeler Peak. Thanks in advance.

I hunted unit 49 5-6 years ago. Confession, I am not the best mule deer hunter but I do work hard at it...backpack in deep, DIY, etc. Saw a tall, 24-25" wide muley the first day. Game warden later told me that was a great deer for the area. Wish I'd known that before hand. My hunt was in the timber, 11k highest land I found. Didn't see another buck the whole hunt. Hope your area is better.

Sheff, i've also hunted unit 49 a few times but i don't think wheeler peak is in that unit, i beleive your in the unit north of 49. Anyway, i think the best way to acces it is through the red river side(north side) or from the highway that crosses from taos to angel fire. Theres alot of forest roads on that side. I haven't hunted that unit but there was a huge buck that came out of there in the early season last year that looked like a damn elk, 200"+ class deer. I think it was taken with one of them lottery tags, never the less, it was taken in that area on public land, so i know for a fact that there is some good genetics running around up there. I know that wheeler is over 12,000 ft, and the rest of the unit goes down to maybe 7-8000, in the lower country around angel fire or taos. I may be too late for you, spent a lot of time up around Wheeler Peak. The easiest access is to go by jeep or atv to Goose Lake. The road is just out of Red River, pretty popular, most anyone can tell you how. Difficult to get a full size pick up up there, but I have seen several. You can access that whole country from there with a fairly easy hike up the ridge. Wheeler Peak will be to south. There are mule deer all up and down the drainages, along the road you drive up. Probably find the biggest ones in the parks below the lake. Good luck,
