What would you guys do?

If I am unsucessful on drawing a tag this year, I was wondering if I could get some input from you guys on where to go where the tags are OTC. I am planning on doing an archery elk hunt in the backcountry. Should I look into Idaho, or Colorado?

I've hunted Id a few times only rifle though. Mostly on the Wy boreder in the Tex Creek and Palasades areas. I think that if you buy an OTC bull archery tag and do not fill you can harvest a cow with the same tag in rifle season. If you are interested in this area I can help you out on some water holes and the areas I've hunted in.

go to ID. CO OTC units are so over run with hunter. You will see more hunters than elk at least what i have experienced and ID more than likely will have bigger bulls.

IMHO - I'd go to Colorado. Hunted rifle hunts alot always a lot of elk. Get off the road/ATV hunt hard. More in elk in Colorado then anywhere and the wolves aren't there yet. Idaho has some serious wolf issues.

I agree with gon4elk. Unfortunately, ID has some serious lobo issues and it isn't going to get better anytime soon. Try CO and you could contact Matt Burrows from stick and string outfitters for a good recommendation for areas.

Ikeepitcold is right, either sex archery hunts in in these areas. I have hunted around there several times and taken a few elk. Not a bad hunt but just like alot of places get farther off the road and get away from the crowds and you will enjoy the hunt more. let me know if I can be of more help. Good luck.

Well I live in Idaho. There are elk, just not BIG BULLS to speak of. There are BIG WOLF though Some are so big you could put your elk tag on em!
If you hunt the West side of Idaho, you will see more hunters. If you hunt north or central wilderness areas, its much quieter. There is a plethora of cow elk, and you will see lots of 5x and a few less 6x bulls. Bigger than that is going to make a cover shot for Eastmans if its coming out of Idaho..lol

Don't for get Oregon has the third largest elk pop after Co and Mt and otc bow tags and rifle tags on the west side

Might even have more elk than Mt now because of the wolves but Or is getting wolves too
