I don't think you'll find many in here agreeing to the background checks for guns. This specific law may sound good to most citizens requiring checks on private sales but it is the slippery slope to more regulations that is the scary part. The weed stuff is about recreational pot, medical is already legal. I'm not strongly opinionated on that but the gun regs are what needs to be paid attention to. When the paper says 8 out of 10 agree with it it scares me, especially because the RJ is the only big paper in the state that I've seen conservative views from. My hometown paper is a liberal rag of garbage. This is what happens when all the new population in our state is from the communist state to our west.

The referendum process will lead to "Tyranny of the majority" as Thomas Jefferson stated. I guess that is what a true democracy is though. As a career law enforcement officer, I found that alcohol made some people aggressive and stupid, while MJ tended to make most users non-aggressive and stupid. A new study found that regular MJ use actually shrinks the portion of the brain that processes judgement and ambition. I would bet that the vast majority who would vote for one would also vote for the other.

When I voted in early voting in October, there were several people collecting signatures for "Public Safety". It was this ballot inititive on every gun transfer going through a licensed dealer with very few exceptions. I questioned the guy collecting signatures and asked him if while at the shooting range could I loan a friend a gun to try and this was not one of the exceptions. He tried to tell me that he was sure that no one "Would" be arrested for that. He kept claiming that their goal was to keep the felons from buying guns off of craigslist. I also am a retired law enforcement officer and have to tell you that far more criminals aquire guns through other avenues and sources than craigslist. We really need to educate our elected representatives and our friends and neighbors of what the ramifacations of such a measure are. While we can all support keeping guns away from criminals this only serves to penalize the law abiding. Thanks and God bless

So, you all are voting to make it easier to aquire an illegal drug, and at the same time, voting to make it harder to aquire legal firearms.

God Bless America

Let the people that need the weed for medical purposes get it (IMO)

Now I live in one of, if not thee most unfriendly gun state in the country. We have to have a Firearms Owners Identification Card and have to show it to buy ammunition. A non-resident can walk right in to Walmart buy all the ammo he wants and I cant buy it unless I show the card. We have background checks here and a waiting period for everything. We now can get a concealed carry permit but it costs a bunch of money.

And the one thing I see??? The criminals are going to get the guns no matter what rules are in place as they don't care about them anyway...........

People doing illegal things are going to buy the illegal guns.

The so called "background checks" are really only criminal history checks. Real background checks like the multiple ones that I have had for various jobs are very intrusive and expensive for the agency conducting them. If you know some of the history regarding background checks, it was only through restrictions passed by congress that stopped the states and the justice dept. from keeping those records permanently. But for that, you have "registration". Were has registration led to confiscation? 1. The Soviet Union 2. Nazi Germany. OK, that doesn't concern you since we are not a totalitarian state as they were? Well, more recently you can add, 3.Great Britain 4.Australia

I can't for the life of me believe that anyone on this forum would be for more gun control. I don't know about any of you, but I won't tolerate any drinking during hunting hours (that includes lunch) in my hunting camp, or any drug use at any time. JMO
