Went To The Store Today

Well, I went to the store today after doing a little scouting for the muzzle loader season and was quite surprised at the number of trucks and trucks with trailers that had home freezers strapped to them. There were at least 4 trailers and a couple of trucks with them in the bed ready for their owners to fill them with deer or elk.

I ran into a couple of bow hunters inside of the store, they were unmistakable hunters since they were decked out head to toe in camo and buying donuts. I talked to them for a while, they were from Indiana and this was their first hunt out here in Colorado and they had spend the last week in the hills and had to come down for some provisions. One of the trucks in the parking lot with the freezer was theirs and I asked them how it worked out for them. Right now they were using it to freeze ice to place in the coolers but they said that they were set up for butchering and freezing whatever they got before they headed home. They also said that a friend had told them that this was a good way to do it to preserve the meat. Smart guys.

Now to my scouting trip this morning, my bucks that I have been watching have disappeared since the bow hunt started a week and a half ago. I plan on going out again tomorrow morning to see if I can find them. My fear is that they have turned into city bucks since they have been living less than a mile from town along the golf course. Hopefully I can find them again and see if I can put that 250 grain Thor bullet into one of their boiler rooms.

These two bucks have grown up on the outskirts of a town. They were there last year but they stayed in the think oaks which are a muzzle loaders nightmare. You can spot them in openings but they are too far for a ML to shoot and by the time you get down into them you can't see jack.

Hopefully one of them will make a mistake this year.

You could buy a nice chest freezer for less than a lot of coolers sell for nowadays.

Good luck on your hunts..

Thanks Quinton.

Well day one is a bust. I went down into the oak brush hell and had some break out of it in front of me and only got close to a couple of 2 pts that didn't know any better. Tomorrow I'll head up to 10,000' and see what is hanging around.

The bucks that I was after moved into town after the bow hunters pushed them a little bit too hard. But then when town is only 1/2 mile away it isn't hard. In the morning I'll head up to treeline and see what I can find. The only problem with that is that shots are usually a long ways off for a muzzle loader.

Then if nothing I'll pussy foot around mid mountain.

The 250's just put a softball size hole through them. You should of seen a few deer that I shot with a .54 430 gr maxi ball. If you hit them in the ribs you loose all the ribs on both sides. Heaven forbid you hit them anywhere else.

The ones that I saw were battle scared enough that I doubt that they came from a rental shop. Freezers are cheap enough on the used market that you can just buy one for what you would pay for a rental.

In the next couple of years I am going to be getting rid of a 21 cubic foot one, I'll quite likely just give it away since it is so old but it still does a fantastic job of keeping things below zero.

If I was going in a certain direction I would gladly haul it but when we head down to Arizona we have a full truck with 2 4 wheelers and all of our gear.

Even when it is my time to drive down this coming February I had to make a box to strap down to the tailgate to get my coues deer mount home. The taxidermist called me last month and told me that it is done and I have been trying to figure out a excuse to drive 1600 miles round trip to go get it. But since I'll be down there in a few months I haven't been able to come up with a good enough reason except that it is done.
