After 18 years of applying for a sheep tag I finally, against all odds, drew a tag. Fortunately I had an experienced sheep hunter offer to join me on my hunt, so I didn't have to worry so much about mistakenly shooting a ram that may have been well below the potential for the unit.
My hunt only lasted two days. The first day we spent the afternoon looking at lots of sheep through the spotting scopes from two miles away. The second day we hiked up the mountain about a mile and got within rifle range of two good rams. The one that was slightly bigger was close to 350 yards and walking away. The other ram was at 282 yards and broadside. I decided he was good enough for me.
The first shot with the 140 grain Berger out of my 270 Winchester was through the shoulder. He ran about 50 yards and stopped. I shot again and this time it was through the heart. He didn't go anywhere but down after that.
This was November 7, 2014. My first, and only, sheep hunt I'll ever go on!
I have better pictures but I'll attach a couple that I have on my phone. Oh, I almost forgot to say, my taxidermist rough scored it at 160 3/8. Not the biggest ram ever but it's a good ram for the area I was hunting.
