Does anybody know what the difference is between the vortex summit ss tripod and the summit ss-p. Besides thethe fact that the ss-p is the new version. Whats the changes? Seems like its a good compromise on quality, weight, and price.

Sounds good. I wonder if either of them has used this setup. I just got a new razor 11-33 for backpacking, so i dont need a real heavy duty tripod. I also like how small it goes.
Ive played with the summit ss. I recommend it for a minimalist approach. If binos and a 50 are your max optic burdens it will DO. If the winds pick up youll be hunkered down on your butt. The shake under windy conditions gets a bit tiresome.
Like I said though, with the 50 under "normal" (everyones def. differs) conditions it will do.
The difference between the summit ss and the ss-p is the P model offers the panhead. I have not had any time behind the ss panhead. I do prefer panhead style for any spotting scope use personally. To me the ball head is kind of a pain when panning. Its super touchy and limiting.

I have the Summit SS (ball head) and it works for me. I backpack hunt and need to save the room so I went with it. I have the Nikon ED50 and the tripod works for the small 50mm. I have not seen the quality of the pan head the SS will be coming with, but as long as it is not plastic I think it will be a nice choice.
